For most handheld PC players, 1 TB is a practical middle ground: it leaves room for a varied installed library without assuming you need to keep every game on the device. Choose 512 GB if you are comfortable uninstalling games as you rotate through them; consider 2 TB if you want several large games installed at once. These are planning tiers, not official recommendations, and usable space is lower than the capacity printed on the device.
Choose capacity by how many games you want installed
There is no universal storage requirement for a handheld gaming PC. The useful amount depends on the games you play, their current install requirements, and how often you are willing to remove and reinstall titles. Check each game’s current store or support page before choosing the smallest capacity you would be comfortable with.
| Capacity | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 512 GB | A smaller, rotating selection of games | You may need to uninstall games more often to make room. |
| 1 TB | A varied library with fewer frequent installation swaps | It still may not hold every game you want installed. |
| 2 TB | A large library or several storage-heavy games kept installed together | Confirm the handheld supports that capacity and the replacement drive’s form factor before buying. |
These tiers are practical guidance, not a benchmark or a rule from handheld manufacturers. Also, a 1 TB label does not mean 1 TB will be free for games: the operating system and other files use space, and the amount varies by device and use.
What Steam Deck storage specifications show
Valve’s Steam Deck technical specifications list configurations with 64 GB eMMC, 256 GB NVMe SSD, and 512 GB NVMe SSD storage. The specifications also identify a socketed 2230 M.2 module and a high-speed microSD card slot. These are Steam Deck examples, not a complete survey of handheld PCs.

Valve’s Steam Deck product page says, “All models of Steam Deck support expanding your storage via microSD cards.” This confirms expansion support for Steam Deck, but it does not establish a universal compatibility rule for other handhelds.
Why one game’s requirement cannot predict your whole library
The 7 Days to Die Help Center guidance for Steam Deck and compatible handhelds, updated May 20, 2026, lists 20 GB of free storage in both its minimum and recommended handheld settings. It lists 64 GB eMMC as minimum storage and a 1 TB NVMe SSD as recommended storage for its guidance. Those figures apply to that game’s stated settings; they are not a general standard or an average for handheld games.

Check before expanding or replacing storage
- For a microSD card: confirm that your specific handheld supports expansion and check the device’s card compatibility requirements. Valve confirms microSD expansion for Steam Deck, but the cited sources do not compare card loading performance or recommend a particular model.
- For an internal SSD replacement: verify the supported capacity, physical size and interface for your exact handheld, along with its installation requirements. Steam Deck’s 2230 M.2 specification is specific to that device and should not be assumed to apply to other PCs.
- For either option: decide whether you need extra space for games you will keep installed concurrently, rather than choosing capacity based only on a single game’s requirement.
The available figures do not establish a controlled speed comparison among NVMe SSD, eMMC, and microSD storage, so they do not support a specific promise about loading-time differences.
