Choose Xbox Game Pass if you’ll play several games in its library during the months you subscribe and are comfortable with access ending when your subscription expires or a game leaves. Buy a Call of Duty game if you expect to play that specific title for longer and want access without keeping a subscription. Compare the actual cost for your expected subscription months with the current price of the exact game edition—and check that the plan, platform, and region offer the access you want.
How does Game Pass access compare with buying Call of Duty?
| Factor | Xbox Game Pass | Buying a Call of Duty game |
|---|---|---|
| What you pay for | A recurring subscription to a plan and its benefits. | A specific game edition at its current purchase price. |
| Access to the game | Only while the subscription is active and the game remains in the library, according to Xbox’s Game Pass FAQ. | Ongoing access to the purchased game, subject to platform and service requirements. This does not guarantee that online services will remain available indefinitely. |
| Other games | Can add value if you play other included titles during your subscription. The library size is not a guarantee that a particular Call of Duty is included. | Purchase gives you the specific edition, not a Game Pass library. |
| Price to compare | Your plan’s current local monthly cost multiplied by the months you expect to subscribe. | The live price of the exact edition, including any temporary promotion. |
Xbox says availability varies by time, region, plan, and platform. Check the individual game listing and your account’s local plan details rather than assuming every Call of Duty title is included in every tier.
Which option is cheaper for the time you expect to play?
Use this simple comparison:
Expected Game Pass cost = current monthly plan price × expected subscription months.
Then compare that total with the current purchase price for the Call of Duty edition you want. Use local checkout prices, not an old promotion or a price from another region. If you would play other included games, that may make the subscription worthwhile to you, but there is no fixed dollar value for those games that applies to every player.

Example: Black Ops 7 in the US
On October 7, 2026, Xbox’s US Game Pass page listed Ultimate at $22.99 per month, Premium at $14.99 per month, and PC Game Pass at $13.99 per month. The US Xbox Store listed the Black Ops 7 Cross-Gen Bundle at $69.99, with a temporary sale price of $34.99 at that time. These are dated US examples, not guaranteed current or regional prices; check the Game Pass page and Xbox Store listing before deciding.
At those listed rates, three months of Ultimate would total $68.97 before taxes or other checkout charges; three months of Premium would total $44.97; and three months of PC Game Pass would total $41.97. Those totals compare subscription payments only; they do not determine which plan provides the game access you need. A sale purchase at $34.99 would cost less than those three-month subscription totals, but the promotion was temporary and access details differ. Always verify plan eligibility for the game and platform.

What do the Game Pass plan and catalog figures tell you?
Xbox’s US page listed these catalog sizes and prices when retrieved on October 7, 2026:
| Plan | Xbox-listed monthly price | Xbox-described catalog |
|---|---|---|
| Ultimate | $22.99 per month | 500+ games across console, PC, and supported devices |
| Premium | $14.99 per month | 200+ games |
| PC Game Pass | $13.99 per month | 300+ PC games |
These are Xbox’s US-listed figures, not worldwide prices, and both prices and catalogs can change. Catalog totals describe the broader library; they do not show whether a specific Call of Duty game is currently included. Consult the current plan page and the game’s own listing for your region, platform, and tier.

Check the exact Call of Duty game, edition, and platform
For a concrete example, the Xbox Store listing for Black Ops 7 identifies a Cross-Gen Bundle and lists Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox on PC versions. It gives November 21, 2025 as the release date. The listing described the game as included with Ultimate for cloud play and said purchase is required to stream it with Essential or Premium. Those access terms are specific to the listing and service described; verify the current offer and whether it applies to your platform and region on the Black Ops 7 Store page.
Do not generalize that example to the whole Call of Duty series. A game may be sold in multiple editions or have different subscription, platform, and cloud-play terms. Confirm the edition’s contents and the way you intend to play before paying.

Choose based on your playing habits
Game Pass is a better fit if…
- You expect to play several games in the catalog, not just one Call of Duty title.
- Your expected subscription months make sense against the game’s current purchase price.
- You are comfortable losing subscription access if you cancel, your subscription expires, or the title leaves the library.
- The plan and platform you want are eligible for that game in your region.
Buying is a better fit if…
- You expect to return to the same Call of Duty game over a longer period.
- You want access to your purchased game without maintaining a Game Pass subscription.
- The current purchase price is preferable to the subscription cost over the period you expect to play.
- You have checked that the edition works on your platform and includes what you intend to buy.
What to verify before you decide
- Identify the exact Call of Duty game and edition you want; do not compare a subscription with a different edition’s price.
- Check the game’s current listing for your region and platform, including whether the game is included with your plan or only available to buy.
- Look up the current local monthly price for the relevant Game Pass plan and multiply it by the months you expect to subscribe.
- Compare that total with the live purchase price, treating any sale as temporary unless the store says otherwise.
- Decide whether access ending after cancellation or a library change fits how you play, and whether other included games materially add value for you.
