Soulslike combat tends to reward commitment, patience, reading enemy patterns and choosing a safe moment to act. Character-action combat tends to put more emphasis on expressive offense: varying attacks, improvising and keeping the fight moving. Those are genre tendencies, not hard rules—and speed or difficulty alone won’t tell you which kind of game you’re playing.
What do the two labels mean?
“Soulslike” is a flexible label rooted in the design and reception of FromSoftware’s Souls games. It often points to deliberate combat in which enemy patterns matter and a poorly timed action can leave the player vulnerable. It does not promise a specific stamina system, dodge timing, build structure or set of defensive moves; FromSoftware’s games themselves change their mechanics from one title to another. Hidetaka Miyazaki’s PlayStation.Blog interview discusses that evolution.
“Character-action” is also a broad descriptive term, not a formal genre standard. Devil May Cry is a familiar example. In an Unreal Engine interview about Soulstice, the developer describes combat as central to the series. A useful distinction is what the game most encourages: Soulslikes often ask you to read an opponent and take a measured opening, while character-action games often give more weight to varied, expressive offense.
How to compare the combat
These contrasts are practical guideposts, not a universal checklist. Individual games can mix or reject them.

So, instead of asking only whether a game feels fast or hard, look at its action commitment, defensive options, sources of player expression and how its tools or builds shape your choices. These are the dimensions that make the contrast useful; they are not a standardized genre taxonomy.
Why Sekiro is a boundary case
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is connected to Souls through its developer and audience, but it is not simply “Dark Souls at a different speed.” In a Game Informer interview published August 21, 2018, Miyazaki said: “Sekiro is not a continuation of the Soulsborne series, so we have created a brand-new combat system specifically for this game.” That is the director’s description of the game’s design, rather than proof that it has no family resemblance to Souls.

Producer Yasuhiro Kitao described its protagonist as “much more agile and mobile than characters have generally been in past FromSoftware titles.” He also pointed to prosthetic tools and Combat Arts as options that can change tactics against different enemies in a March 13, 2019 PlayStation.Blog interview. In a separate Activision interview published December 11, 2018, Kitao said its battle system, setting, story, characters and mechanics were unique to the game. That statement describes the team’s design intent; it does not settle every possible genre label.
Sekiro is best understood as its own combat design: difficult, readable action with its own movement, defense and tools. In an Xbox Wire interview published March 19, 2019, producer Robert Conkey likewise said it felt like a different type of game from the Dark Souls titles, which he categorized as action RPGs. The example shows why a studio’s combat vocabulary can change substantially between releases—and why one borderline game cannot define an entire category.

How to use the distinction when choosing a game
- If you enjoy studying opponents, managing risk and acting during carefully chosen openings, the Soulslike tendency may appeal to you.
- If you prefer experimenting with attack sequences, improvising and keeping offense expressive, the character-action tendency may be a better fit.
- If a game seems to fit both, inspect how its defenses, recovery windows, tools and rewards shape moment-to-moment decisions rather than relying on its label.
Neither approach is inherently harder, faster or more skillful. The useful question is whether you want the combat to emphasize measured responses, expressive offense or a mixture of the two.
