Xbox Game Pass is a subscription that lets you play eligible games in your plan’s library while your subscription is active and each game remains available. Downloading a game does not buy it: access can end when the subscription expires or the game leaves the catalog. You can install supported games or stream eligible ones where your plan, region, device, and title allow it.
What Xbox Game Pass includes
Choose a plan, sign in through a supported Xbox or Windows experience, and play eligible titles in that plan’s library. The catalog is not a permanent collection attached to your account. Microsoft says access lasts until the subscription is canceled or expires, or the game leaves the Game Pass library. An installed game can therefore stop being playable through Game Pass even if it remains on your drive. Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass page lists current plans, benefits, and the catalog.
The US plan page accessed October 7, 2026, displayed these headline library sizes. They are Microsoft’s page figures, not independently audited counts; actual titles and availability vary by plan, region, platform, and time.
| Plan | Headline library size shown on the US page | Availability noted on the page |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | 50+ games | Plan benefits and catalog depend on the current offer and market. |
| Premium | 200+ games | Plan benefits and catalog depend on the current offer and market. |
| Ultimate | 500+ games | Plan benefits and catalog depend on the current offer and market. |
| PC Game Pass | 300+ games | Described as PC-only. |
Plans also differ in features such as day-one releases, online console multiplayer, cloud gaming, and other included services. These details and offers can change, so check the plan page and current game catalog for your country before subscribing or relying on a specific title or benefit.

Do you keep Game Pass games after you cancel?
No. A Game Pass download is not a purchase or permanent license. If you cancel or let the subscription expire, Game Pass access ends when the subscription period ends. Access can also end earlier for an individual title if it leaves the library. To keep playing a game that is no longer included or that you no longer have subscription access to, you need a separate license, such as a purchase, where available.
Downloading versus cloud streaming
Download and install
Install eligible games on a supported console or PC and play them locally. Microsoft describes Store games as digital downloads that can be downloaded, installed, or reinstalled; that general download capability does not extend a Game Pass license beyond the subscription or a title’s time in the catalog. Microsoft’s download instructions cover finding and installing Microsoft Store downloads.

Stream eligible games
Cloud gaming can let you start supported games on supported devices without downloading them. It is not available for every game, device, plan, or region. Microsoft’s current US page says cloud playtime limits vary by plan, and PC Game Pass does not include cloud gaming. It also notes that select games a subscriber owns may be streamable. Check the live plan details and catalog for the specific game and device rather than assuming streaming is included everywhere.
Can you play downloaded games offline?
Offline access depends on the game, platform, and current Xbox requirements. The available official information does not establish a universal offline-verification interval, so there is no safe general promise that every downloaded Game Pass game will work offline or for a particular number of days. Check Xbox’s current instructions for your platform and title before relying on offline play.

How to stop Game Pass from renewing
- Open subscription management. Use your Microsoft account’s Services & subscriptions page, or manage the subscription on an Xbox console. If you subscribed through a third party, manage billing through that provider.
- Find your Game Pass subscription. Check the plan and account shown so you change the correct subscription.
- Turn off recurring billing or cancel. Follow the current on-screen option to stop the next renewal. Microsoft’s recurring billing instructions explain the account process; exact screens can change.
- Verify the status and end date. Confirm that recurring billing is off or cancellation is complete, and note the date displayed for the end of access.
Turning off recurring billing does not necessarily end access immediately. Microsoft says benefits continue until the subscription expires after recurring billing is switched off. Complete the change before the next billing date to prevent the next charge, and use the account’s displayed status and end date to confirm what happens next.
Refunds and recent renewal charges
Microsoft’s Xbox page describes a limited refund scenario for a recent recurring billing charge: the request must be made within 30 days, and the stated allowance is once per Microsoft account per subscription product. Eligibility and terms may vary; consult the current Xbox Game Pass page and Microsoft support rather than assuming a refund is automatic.

What to check before choosing a plan
- Whether the games you want are currently in that plan’s catalog in your region and on your platform.
- Whether a title is downloadable, cloud-streamable, or both on your devices.
- Whether the plan includes the features you need, such as day-one releases, console multiplayer, or cloud gaming.
- The current local price, renewal date, and cancellation terms shown for your account.
Microsoft states that game titles, numbers, features, and availability vary over time, by region, plan, and platform. Its live plan and catalog page is the place to verify current details.
