How Assists, Switching, and Four-Character Teams Work in MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls

MARVEL Tōkon gives each player a four-character team, but teammates enter in stages. Here’s how assists, switching, and team experimentation work.

MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a four-character tag-team fighter, but you do not start a match with all four teammates available. The first two selected characters are ready at the opening; a qualifying stage break or wall splat, or losing a round, brings the other two into the match. Assists let you call teammates into the action, and the July 2026 Open Beta guide documents how to select and switch to them.

Why are only two characters available at the start?

You build a team of four, but the match begins with only the first two selected characters available. The other two join after a qualifying stage break or wall splat, or after you lose a round. This staged access is part of the match flow, not a sign that your team selection failed. The official game FAQ says not every hit causes a break: certain attacks or throws, select Skill attacks, and a successful light-route Link Attack near the edge of the screen can trigger one. A break may lead to a stage transition or wall splat and assemble the rest of your team.

In practical terms, the characters you choose first matter immediately, while your full lineup becomes available as the match develops. The FAQ does not say that any particular attack will always trigger a break, so treat the listed conditions as possibilities rather than a guaranteed sequence.

How do assists work?

An Assemble Assist calls a teammate to perform an assist action while you continue fighting. Which teammate answers depends on the direction you input with the call. The exact controls below come from PlayStation’s beginner guide for the July 2026 Open Beta; button mappings can change with updates, so check the in-game controls if your version differs.

  • Press X: call an Assemble Assist.
  • Neutral or right: call teammate two.
  • Down: call teammate three.
  • Left: call teammate four.

PlayStation developer interview coverage gives a reason an assist may not look identical every time. Game Director and Lead Battle Designer Kazuto Sekine said that, depending on the situation, an Assemble call can make the assist perform a different action suited to that moment. That describes the system’s context-sensitive design; it does not publish a complete trigger list for each action.

How do you switch characters?

In the same July 2026 Open Beta guide, switching uses a directional input plus L2. After an assist, a brief on-screen “Switch?” prompt appears; press L2 while it is visible to switch control to the called character. Start by learning which teammate each direction calls, then add the prompt-based switch once the assist itself feels familiar.

Because the button directions are documented for the Open Beta, they should not be treated as a permanent mapping for every later build. Use the current in-game control display if the prompt or input does not match.

Can teammates help on defense?

Yes. The Open Beta guide also documents two defensive uses of the teammate call, both using Square plus X:

  • Assemble Counter: use it while not guarding. It can counter an attack during the backstep.
  • Crossover: use it while guarding to call a teammate to interrupt the opponent’s attack.

These are distinct from simply calling an assist to add pressure: one is a counter opportunity during a backstep, while the other is a guard-time interruption. The documented inputs are beta-era controls and may differ in a later version.

How should you build a four-character team?

PlayStation encourages experimenting with combinations to find combos, synergies, and strategies. Its official materials describe a four-person team with characters that have distinct abilities and playstyles, but they do not establish a universally best lineup, quantified synergy bonuses, or fixed roles such as “anchor.” Treat team-building ideas as experiments, not rules.

A useful beginner approach is to choose the character you most want to play as your focus, then select teammates whose assist options and playstyles you are curious to try. As you play, notice which calls help you create openings, respond to pressure, or extend an attack; adjust the lineup based on what feels useful to you. This is a practical way to explore, not an official ranking system.

The learning curve need not mean mastering four fighters before you begin. Sekine has said: “Generally, a team VS fighting game requires the player to learn multiple characters, but for MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, you only need to master one character in order to play the game.” Start with one main, learn the team-entry rules and assist directions, then expand your knowledge of the other characters over time.
