Measure the usable space at its narrowest and lowest points, then compare those measurements with the specifications for the exact vehicle, including relevant mirrors or other protrusions. Check the entrance separately from the interior: a car may fit between the walls but not through the opening, or leave too little room to get in and out.
What to measure before comparing
Use the same basic dimensions for the vehicle and the space: width, length or depth, and height. Record the vehicle’s exact model year and configuration, because dimensions can vary by year, trim, and equipment. Honda advises comparing a garage’s measurements with the vehicle’s length, width, and height specifications; its vehicle-buying knowledge center notes that those dimensions appear in the specifications section of its website.
Do not assume the published body width includes mirrors, accessories, or other protruding equipment. Check the specification notes or verify the width of the actual vehicle in the configuration you plan to park. Treat the tightest measurement as the constraint: a single narrow post, low track, or shallow storage area can matter more than the space’s average dimensions.
Measure the entrance and interior separately
Garage-door opening
Measure the clear width and height of the opening, not just the door’s nominal size. Also look along the vehicle’s approach for tracks, hardware, or other low or projecting obstructions. Amarr distinguishes the opening dimensions from door-system measurements such as sideroom, headroom, and backroom; those installation dimensions do not by themselves establish that a vehicle will fit. Usable space inside
Measure the usable interior width and depth where the vehicle will actually sit. Note anything that intrudes into that area, including posts, shelves, stored items, steps, or equipment. Check overhead clearance where a ceiling, track, or stored object could limit height. A sketch can make these constraints easier to compare; a garage measurement worksheet recommends recording door and relevant ceiling dimensions, the vehicle’s make, model, and year, and a sketch of the space.
Compare each dimension, then consider everyday use
- Confirm the vehicle: Find manufacturer specifications for the exact model year and configuration. Record length, width, and height, and verify whether the width includes the mirrors or other relevant protrusions.
- Check the entrance: Compare the vehicle’s relevant width and height with the opening’s clear width and height, accounting for obstructions along the approach.
- Check the parking position: Compare vehicle length with usable depth, and vehicle width with usable interior width. Include obstacles that reduce the space where the car must sit.
- Check overhead constraints: Compare vehicle height with the lowest relevant ceiling, track, or stored item along the path and in the parking position.
- Assess access: Consider whether the actual occupants can open the doors, get out, and reach nearby storage. A vehicle can fit dimensionally yet be inconvenient to use.
There is no universal extra clearance in the cited guidance that guarantees comfortable access. Judge it against the vehicle’s doors, the people using it, and how the space is used. If any comparison is close, recheck the limiting measurement directly rather than relying on a rounded estimate.

Why published parking-space numbers are not universal fit rules
Some published dimensions apply to particular regulations or design contexts, not every private garage or parking stall. The U.S. Access Board’s ADA Standards specify a minimum width of 96 inches (2440 mm) for an accessible car space and 132 inches (3350 mm) for an accessible van space; an exception permits a 96-inch van space when it has a 96-inch access aisle. For marked spaces, width is measured from the centerline of the markings, subject to an exception when a space or aisle is not adjacent to another one. These are accessibility requirements for regulated spaces, not a universal car-fit test. See the ADA Standards for parking spaces.
Victorian Government guidance recommends at least 6 metres long by 3.5 metres wide for a single garage or carport space, and 5.5 metres wide for a double space, measured inside the garage or carport. It recommends adding 500 mm between tandem spaces. These are jurisdiction-specific design recommendations, not a guarantee that a given vehicle will fit an existing space. A Federal Highway Administration-hosted parking-garage report describes 9 feet of stall width as optimum for most self-park applications in its design discussion, citing door opening, convenient access, and alignment margin. - Vehicle length, width, and height for the exact year and configuration
- Width including relevant mirrors or protrusions
- Clear entrance width and height
- Usable interior width and depth
- Low or projecting obstacles at the entrance and overhead
- Approach or turning constraints, if present
- Room to open doors, exit, and reach storage
