Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo install SteamOS on a replacement Steam Deck SSD, create a recovery USB drive, boot the Deck from it, then choose Wipe Device & Install SteamOS. Valve says this option fully wipes the device and installs stock SteamOS, so use it for a clean installation on the new drive—not to preserve existing data.
Check the SSD and Deck model first
The physical SSD replacement and SteamOS installation are separate jobs. For the LCD Steam Deck, iFixit identifies the internal drive as a single-sided M.2 2230 SSD in its Steam Deck SSD Replacement guide. That guide is LCD-specific; iFixit directs OLED owners to a separate, OLED-specific replacement guide. Confirm your model and follow the matching teardown instructions before opening the device.
The iFixit guide lists Phillips drivers and opening picks among the repair tools and recommends standard electrostatic-discharge precautions. Follow its full model-specific instructions for disassembly and reassembly; the steps below cover installing SteamOS after the replacement drive is in place.
Prepare a SteamOS recovery USB drive
You need a USB key with at least 8 GB of storage. Writing the recovery image formats the drive, so use one whose contents can be erased. Valve’s SteamOS Installation and Repair instructions provide the current image and media-creation steps.

- Download the SteamOS recovery image from Valve’s installation page.
- Write the image to the USB key. Valve recommends Rufus for Windows and Balena Etcher for macOS and Linux. Linux users can also use the command-line method on Valve’s page; follow the live instructions there for the current image filename and command.
- When the write finishes, safely eject the USB drive.
Boot the Deck from the recovery drive
- Shut down the Steam Deck and connect the recovery USB drive, either directly or through a hub.
- Hold Volume Up and press Power. After the chime, release Volume Up to enter Boot Manager.
- Select EFI USB Device to start the recovery environment. Valve cautions that the screen may remain dark for about a minute while it loads.
Choose the clean-install option
When the recovery desktop appears, select Wipe Device & Install SteamOS. Valve states: “This will fully wipe your device and install stock SteamOS.” On a replacement SSD, this is the straightforward clean-install path. It is destructive, so do not expect it to retain games or personal content from an existing installation.
Wait for the installation to finish, then reboot and follow the SteamOS welcome experience.

Which recovery option should you use?
| Option | What it does | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Wipe Device & Install SteamOS (also described as Re-image Device) | Fully wipes the device and installs stock SteamOS, according to Valve. | A clean installation on a new or blank replacement SSD. |
| Repair SteamOS | Reinstalls SteamOS while attempting to preserve games and personal content, according to Valve. | Troubleshooting an existing installation when preserving content is the aim. Preservation is an attempt, not a guarantee. |
| Recovery tools | Opens a prompt for boot-partition changes. | When boot-partition recovery is the goal. |
Valve’s separate SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting page also covers factory reset, rolling back to a previous OS version while retaining user data, and erasing user data. The factory-reset route within Steam requires the Deck to boot into Steam; Valve notes that reinstalling SteamOS through that route may require an active internet connection.
