A game that launches has passed only the first check. To decide whether it is ready for someone else to play, define what its core mechanics should do, repeat those checks, investigate failures, and ask another person to try the game without coaching. Then review the generated code and content before distributing a build.
Define what “working” means for your game
Write down a short set of expected behaviors in plain language before making changes. Focus on the actions that make the game playable from beginning to end:
- What input starts a game or begins a level?
- How should the player move, interact, or use an ability?
- What counts as success or failure, and what feedback should the game show?
- Do pause, restart, menus, and transitions behave as intended?
- Can the player recover from a mistake or reach the next state?
Turn each important expectation into an observable check. For example, perform the same sequence of inputs and see whether the expected state change occurs. That is a repeatable smoke test, not proof that the entire game is correct.
A 2026 preprint, “SWE-Game: Can Coding Agents Build the Games We Want?”, evaluates generated games using a combination of engine-state checks, replay of reference inputs, and demonstrations of features. Its authors report that the highest overall scores across six models remained below 60 out of 100 in the three construction tasks they tested; the Brief-to-Game task reached 50.38. Those results describe that benchmark, not the quality of every AI-generated game or a score you can infer from your own checks.

Reproduce problems before trying to fix them
Play the ordinary route through the game first, then try edge cases tied to its mechanics: jump near a ledge, interact while moving, restart after losing, or pause during a transition. When something goes wrong, record the exact steps, what you expected, what actually happened, and any error message. Investigate one reproducible failure at a time rather than changing several unrelated things at once.
Engine debugging tools can help reveal whether a problem comes from code, physics, navigation, or performance. Godot 3.6’s documentation describes its debugger and profilers, runtime collision and navigation visualization, remote debugging, breakpoints, and options for syncing changed scripts or scenes during a run. Fix the cause and check for regressions
Make a small, targeted change when practical. Then rerun the scenario that revealed the defect and revisit the other core checks. A fix to movement, for example, may affect collision behavior or level transitions. There is no universal number of repetitions or mandatory test framework for a small game; the useful standard is that important behavior can be reproduced and checked after a change.
Randomized or fragile gameplay can make comparisons difficult. Record the input sequence or set up a repeatable starting state where possible. The 2023 workshop paper “PlayTest: A Gamified Test Generator for Games” describes repeated game testing as tedious and error-prone and proposes deriving test cases from player actions. It presents a research proposal, not a validated consumer testing tool.

Measure performance before tuning it
If the game stutters, loads slowly, or struggles on its intended device, profile it before rewriting code. Record a baseline, make a change, and compare using the same build settings. Repeat measurements because results fluctuate; a small timing difference from unlike runs is not reliable evidence of an improvement.
Godot’s contributor optimization guide recommends profiling real games, comparing like-for-like builds, repeating measurements, and checking multiple platforms where appropriate. Ask someone else to play without a walkthrough
Give another person a build and a simple goal, such as reaching the end of a level, without explaining every interaction. Watch where they hesitate, what they think will happen, and whether they can finish or restart. Their confusion can point to unclear controls or feedback even when the code behaves as written. Automated checks are useful for repeating defined observations; a human player can reveal experience problems those checks do not measure.

Keep track of what was generated and what you changed. Review art, audio, text, code, and dependencies for suitability for your intended audience and distribution. In Godot, take particular care with scripts that run inside the editor: the stable documentation warns that @tool scripts can modify the project from the editor, potentially with permanent changes and no undo/redo.
