Check the game’s PlayStation Store listing for its contents, age rating, compatibility notices, and requirements. If you do not know their preference, a PlayStation Store gift card lets them choose—but its region must match their account.
Start with the recipient’s console
Ask whether they play on PS4 or PS5. For a PS5, also check whether it has a disc drive: a PS4 game disc cannot be used on PS5 Digital Edition. PlayStation’s Games Support explains disc compatibility and eligible PS4-to-PS5 upgrades.

Some eligible PS4 games offer an upgrade to a PS5 digital version. For a disc-based upgrade, PlayStation requires a PS5 with a disc drive, and the original disc must stay inserted whenever the recipient plays the upgraded game. Do not assume that owning a PS5 means they can use a disc.
Check the exact game and edition
Game editions can differ in included content and entitlements. On the game’s PlayStation Store page, verify the platform, edition name, included items, age rating, compatibility notices, and system requirements before purchasing. For a special or collector’s edition, check the listing for the specific game rather than relying on the edition label. Confirm whether its extras are physical items, digital add-ons, or other entitlements, and whether the listing actually includes a disc. Contents vary by game.
Choose the right way to give it

PlayStation’s 2025 U.S. gift guide recommends Store gift cards when the buyer is not sure what to choose; recipients can use them for games, add-ons, or subscriptions. A digital purchase avoids shipping and disc compatibility concerns, but only makes a good surprise if you know the recipient wants that title and edition.

Check the gift-card region before purchasing
PlayStation Store voucher codes must be for the same region as the recipient’s account. PlayStation says an account’s region cannot be changed, and the voucher indicates its region. Do not assume that a card sold in your country will work with an account registered elsewhere. If you cannot confirm the account region, ask the recipient or choose a different gift.

Account for age ratings and family settings
Check the game’s age rating as well as the recipient’s console and edition. PlayStation says child accounts can buy only content with suitable age ratings and only when a family manager has set spending limits. These restrictions can affect whether a child can buy or use the intended gift; PlayStation’s purchase guidance covers the relevant account considerations.

A quick pre-purchase checklist
- Confirm whether the recipient has a PS4 or PS5.
- If you are buying a disc, confirm the console has a disc drive; PS5 Digital Edition cannot use PS4 game discs.
- Verify the game’s exact platform and edition, including what the listing says is included.
- Check the age rating, compatibility notices, and any system or subscription requirements on the Store listing.
