Chivalry 2 is a multiplayer medieval first-person slasher built around directional melee combat and large team battles. Its appeal, on paper, is the tension between reading an opponent’s next move and adapting to the disorder of a battlefield that can hold up to 64 players. Whether that sounds compelling depends on your appetite for multiplayer melee—not on an assumption that every match is balanced, busy, or smooth on your platform.
This review explains what the game offers, how cross-platform play and progression work, and what to check before buying. The available sources describe the systems and platform listings, but do not establish current population, matchmaking times, balance, or independently measured performance.

What is Chivalry 2?
Chivalry 2 is a multiplayer first-person action game focused on medieval melee battles. Torn Banner Studios says its battles support up to 64 players on all platforms and lists official 64-player and 40-player server options. Team Objective maps progress through multiple stages and objectives, while environmental interactions can let players turn nearby objects into improvised weapons. These scale and feature figures come from the developer, rather than independent testing. Torn Banner Studios’ FAQ
The basic proposition is distinctive: combat is not simply a matter of pointing at an enemy and attacking. Direction, timing, and commitment all matter, while nearby teammates and opponents make fights less orderly than a duel. That combination may suit players who want melee combat with room to learn, but the available sources do not establish how consistently the systems feel in live matches.
How does the combat work?
The official FAQ lists swings, held heavy attacks, parries, stabs, overhead attacks, dodges, combos, ripostes, feints, and drags. On the FAQ’s control description, a basic swing is the starting attack; a heavy attack is held, right-click parries, and mouse-wheel inputs select stabs and overheads. Players can duck or jump around attacks. Controls and mappings can vary by platform and configuration.
#1 Best Overall
- Cross-Play Across All Platforms: Mass-scale battles call for epic battlefields. The inclusion of Cross-Play across all versions smashes the boundaries between PC and console gamers, and allows players to face off on the battlefield together, regardless of platform.
- Stunning Cinematic Presentation - Massive improvement in visual quality, with an atmosphere that thrusts players into their favorite moments from epic medieval Hollywood action films. Brought to you on the latest and best game engine, Unreal Engine 4.
- Epic Medieval Environments - Sprawling medieval environments ranging from tournament grounds to epic full-scale castle sieges.
- Massive Scale - Experience the chaos of epic medieval battlefields as players clash with an intensity meant to capture the large-scale scope of "The Battle of the Bastards" from Game of Thrones.
- Choose your Fighting Style - Your arsenal expands with the new subclass system that provides more variety than ever before. Four base classes expand to various subclasses, an arsenal of unique weapons each with multiple visual variants, and new support items ranging from oil pots to barricades, supply crates and archer's stakes.
Dragging is a way to change an attack’s timing: during the swing, move the mouse or controller stick to accelerate or slow the attack. Feints and ripostes add further timing choices. In practical terms, these mechanics ask you to read an opponent and manage when an attack will land, rather than repeatedly committing to the same swing. This is an explanation of the documented system, not a claim based on hands-on testing.
The range of inputs gives players several ways to vary an exchange, but it also means there is a learning curve. Someone looking for a simple, low-commitment action game may find directional melee less immediately comfortable than a game built around straightforward attacks. The official mechanics list alone cannot establish how steep the learning curve feels in practice.

What classes and weapons can you use?
Torn Banner lists four primary classes, each with three subclasses, for twelve subclasses in total. It also says the game has over 60 weapons, including more than 20 heavy and medium shield variants. These are developer-published counts. The official FAQ
| Class | Subclasses listed by Torn Banner |
|---|---|
| Knight | Officer, Guardian, Crusader |
| Footman | Poleman, Man-at-Arms, Field Engineer |
| Vanguard | Ambusher, Devastator, Raider |
| Archer | Longbowman, Crossbowman, Skirmisher |
That spread provides a choice between different combat roles and weapon styles, including ranged options, but the source material does not provide comparative balance data. It would be misleading to call one class strongest or recommend a build as universally effective.
Is Chivalry 2 cross-platform, and can you party up with friends?
Yes. Torn Banner’s FAQ lists PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and says cross-platform matchmaking has been available since the game launched on 8 June 2021. Cross-platform parties were added in update 2.8, so players can form a party with friends on another supported platform. The FAQ does not provide a current assessment of party reliability or bugs. Torn Banner Studios’ FAQ
When cross-platform parties were introduced in the May 2023 Raiding Party update, Torn Banner described using friend codes to find and invite players across platforms. Its announcement said, “Each player has a unique friend code that can be generated.” That is a description of the feature at launch, not a guarantee about its present-day interface or performance. Raiding Party update announcement, 2 May 2023
Does Chivalry 2 support a controller on PC?
Yes. The developer FAQ says Windows PC has native support for Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers; console editions also have native controller support. A gamepad is an option if you prefer one, but the documented support does not establish that it is better than mouse and keyboard or necessary to play. Torn Banner Studios’ FAQ

Torn Banner says class leveling unlocks customization items that can be purchased with earned Gold. Crowns are premium currency. Both currencies are used for cosmetics such as armor and weapon appearances; the developer says they do not affect gameplay. Crowns can also be used to purchase cosmetic items outright, including items not yet unlocked through progression. The official FAQ
The Raiding Party announcement described that campaign pass as including a free track and premium rewards, with the premium pass priced at 1,000 Crowns and no time limit. That is a dated description of the pass introduced in 2023; it does not establish whether that pass or any particular offer is available now. Raiding Party update announcement, 2 May 2023

Is Chivalry 2 still receiving content updates?
Torn Banner says that, as of the Regicide Update (2.11), it considers the game “content and feature complete.” That tells readers how the developer characterized the game’s content and features; it does not, by itself, establish that bug fixes or other maintenance have ended. The FAQ does not provide a comprehensive current patch cadence. Torn Banner Studios’ FAQ
The Raiding Party update in May 2023 added The Sacking of Bridgetown and the Heavy Cavalry Sword, and introduced a limited-time Mounted Arena mode. The announcement described that mode as a 1v1 horseback joust entering a limited-time queue rotation; it is not evidence that the mode is currently available. What should you know before buying?
The available official sources explain the game’s systems and supported platforms, but they do not establish several factors that can change the experience from one player to another:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Population and matchmaking: current player counts, queue times, and regional matchmaking health are not established.
- Balance and match quality: the class list and combat mechanics do not show how balanced or enjoyable present-day matches are.
- Performance: platform-holder specifications and developer PC requirements are not independent performance tests.
- Support cadence: the “content and feature complete” statement does not answer whether maintenance continues.
- Store availability: prices, editions, and subscription catalog access can vary by region and change over time.
On the documented features, Chivalry 2 is easiest to recommend to players drawn to directional melee, medieval weapons, and large team battles, especially if they want to play with friends across the listed platforms. If current matchmaking health, precise performance, or balance is decisive for you, seek recent platform- and region-specific evidence before purchasing; those questions are not answered by the official feature descriptions.
