Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector has three starting classes: Operator, Extractor, and Machinist. None is established as the universally best choice: classes trade proficiencies against weaknesses and each has a distinct Push ability. For a first run, choose the skill profile and tactical tool that appeal to you, rather than chasing an unsupported tier list.

What starting classes change

In an Xbox Wire interview published July 3, 2024, creator Gareth Damian Martin described the demo’s Operator, Extractor, and Machinist classes as having proficiency in some skills and a debuff in others. The available descriptions do not establish each class’s complete starting values, so the names alone are not enough to infer which checks a class will handle best.

Class also matters beyond skill profiles. The official Steam listing says every class has a unique Push ability that can be upgraded and customized. The PlayStation game description adds that new skill checks let players express their class and character in scenes. The official material does not specify a full class-by-class Push breakdown or show that any class unlocks particular story branches.

Operator, Extractor, or Machinist?

Use the available evidence to compare the kinds of trade-offs, not to assume a specific skill or ability belongs to a named class. Check the descriptions presented in your game version before committing.

What to compare What is established What to check in-game
Skill profile Each class has proficiencies and debuffs; exact starting values are not stated in the cited official descriptions. Which displayed skills are boosted or weakened, and whether that profile suits the checks you want to emphasize.
Push ability Each class has a distinct Push ability that can be upgraded and customized; specific effects and costs are not stated in the cited official descriptions. Read the ability’s exact effect, risks, and upgrade options.
Skill checks in scenes The sequel includes skill checks intended to let class and character come through. Choose the profile that best fits the character you want to play, without assuming a class guarantees a particular branch.
Contracts Contracts are high-risk jobs that play out across multiple cycles and reward preparation and adaptation. Consider whether the class’s displayed skills and Push tool fit the way you want to approach jobs.

How to choose a class for your first run

  1. Read all three class descriptions. Compare the actual starting skills and debuffs shown in your game version; the official pages do not give a complete numeric table.
  2. Inspect each Push ability. Look at its stated effect and risk, then decide which tactical option sounds most interesting to use and develop.
  3. Choose for both scenes and jobs. The game uses class-expressive skill checks as well as multi-cycle contracts, so weigh character expression alongside contract strategy.
  4. Pick the trade-off you prefer. Every class has strengths and weaknesses. There is no supported basis for calling one the safest or strongest choice for every player.

Is any class the best?

No class is established as objectively best by the available official descriptions. The Xbox Wire interview confirms broad skill trade-offs, while the Steam and PlayStation pages describe distinct Push abilities and class-linked checks without providing enough detail to rank the three. Treat class choice as a preference-led decision, and rely on the in-game descriptions for exact effects.
