Which features required owning Vessel of Hatred?
Blizzard identified the following as expansion-owner features: the Nahantu region and its activities, the Spiritborn class, the Vessel of Hatred campaign, Nahantu renown, Runewords, Dark Citadel, Mercenaries, and Kurast Undercity.
Not every change released alongside the expansion required buying it. Blizzard listed the new difficulty system, Paragon changes, item-quality rework, additional character slots, skills and passives, Party Finder, and seasonal content among changes available to all Diablo IV players.

Do you need the Diablo IV base game?
Yes. Vessel of Hatred is an expansion, and its campaign requires purchasing the expansion as well as owning Diablo IV. Blizzard’s later Lord of Hatred announcement also states that the base game is required for both expansions. See Blizzard’s Lord of Hatred announcement.
For a new character, Blizzard recommended completing the base campaign first for the full experience, while also describing a campaign-skip option for players who want to start the expansion’s campaign without replaying it.

Is Vessel of Hatred still the latest Diablo IV expansion?
No. Blizzard announced Lord of Hatred after Vessel of Hatred. That later expansion’s rollout does not change Vessel of Hatred’s original October 7, 2024 launch date.
