There is no single rule for every Legendary: the answer depends on the species and the game, and the in-game setting is separate from questions of identity or story portrayal.
What does “gender” mean for a Legendary Pokémon?
In a game, a Pokémon’s gender is a species-level mechanic that may affect whether an individual is male, female, or unable to have either setting. It is not determined simply by whether the species is called Legendary. The available categories vary across species.
For example, the official Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield site classifies Zacian and Zamazenta as Legendary Pokémon. That classification alone does not establish their gender setting; the relevant game data or a reliable species reference is needed to answer that separate question.
Are all Legendary Pokémon genderless?
No. Genderless or unknown is one possible category, not a rule for all Legendary Pokémon. The cited gender-ratio reference documents variation among Pokémon, including Legendary examples, but it is secondary and does not provide a complete current roster across all games. It supports the general point that settings differ; it should not be treated as an exhaustive or definitive list.

How to check a specific Legendary Pokémon
- Identify the species. Do not infer its setting from another Legendary, even one with a similar role or design.
- Identify the game or generation. Check the data or a species reference for the particular game you mean; do not assume a setting applies across every game.
- Check the game mechanic directly. Look for whether the species is male-only, female-only, has a mixed ratio, or is genderless/unknown. If the reference does not establish the answer for that game, treat it as unconfirmed.
- Separate mechanics from portrayal. A character’s design, name, or pronouns in a story do not by themselves establish its game gender setting.
Does a game setting settle a Legendary’s identity in the story?
Not necessarily. A game’s gender category is a mechanic; it does not answer every question about how a particular Pokémon should be understood in the wider story. Pokémon Support’s January 30, 2026 guidance says that questions about origins, legends, and histories not already answered in games, animated movies, or television are intended to remain open to fans’ imaginations and interpretations: Pokémon Support: “What are the origins, legends, and histories of Pokémon characters or trainers?”
