Does Tick Speed Affect Mobs in Minecraft?

Changing Minecraft’s randomTickSpeed affects selected block updates, not how fast mobs move or spawn. Here’s how simulation distance, render distance, and edition differ.

If by “tick speed” you mean Minecraft’s randomTickSpeed gamerule, generally no: changing it does not make mobs move, behave, or spawn faster. It changes how often certain blocks receive random updates. For Bedrock Edition, simulation distance is the setting that determines how far from the player the game processes entity behavior and mob spawning.

What randomTickSpeed changes

randomTickSpeed controls random block updates, not the overall pace of Minecraft. Those updates affect selected block mechanics, such as crop growth. The default is 3 in Java Edition and 1 in Bedrock Edition, so the same rule name does not mean the same default across editions. Microsoft’s Bedrock /gamerule reference lists randomtickspeed with a default of 1; the Java default of 3 is reported by the Minecraft Wiki.

Mobs are processed through the broader game-tick system. Changing random block tick frequency does not, by itself, accelerate that system or increase mob spawning. The distinction matters because “tick speed” is often used loosely to mean either random tick speed or the pace of game updates.

Which settings matter for mobs?

Setting What it affects What to use it for
randomTickSpeed Random updates to selected blocks Block mechanics such as crop growth, not faster mob behavior or spawning
Simulation distance In Bedrock, the area where entity behavior, mob spawning, and other game mechanics are processed Changing how much nearby gameplay is active
Render distance How far away the game draws blocks and entities Changing how much of the world is visible, not how far gameplay is simulated
doMobSpawning Whether mobs spawn in Bedrock Checking a spawn on/off rule, rather than changing random block updates

Microsoft describes simulation distance as the distance, measured in chunks, from the player within which the game engine processes mechanics. A mob may be visible at render distance without its behavior being processed at that distance. See Microsoft’s simulation distance, render distance, and ticking areas guide.

What this means in Bedrock Edition

In Bedrock, simulation distance explicitly covers entity behavior and mob spawning. Microsoft gives 4 chunks as the default and says some devices allow settings up to 12 chunks. The maximum available depends on the device. Raising simulation distance expands the area with active mechanics and carries a greater performance cost.

The Bedrock gamerule reference lists domobspawning separately from randomtickspeed. If mobs are not spawning, check the world’s spawning rules and relevant game conditions; increasing random tick speed is not the fix for mob spawning.

What this means in Java Edition

Java’s random tick speed default is reported as 3, but it still concerns random block updates rather than mob speed or spawn rate. Mob spawning and random ticks have separate rules for which chunks are involved.

Mojang’s notes for Java snapshot 25w06a say random ticks may occur in chunks within simulation distance or in chunks loaded by another source, while mob spawning remained in the previous radius of 8 chunks around players in that snapshot. That 8-chunk statement is specific to snapshot 25w06a, not a universal spawn distance for every Java version. Check the mechanics for the version you are playing before using exact chunk ranges to diagnose a farm.

Which setting should you change?

  • To affect crop growth or other random-tick block behavior: adjust randomTickSpeed, keeping in mind that its default differs between Java and Bedrock.
  • To affect how far Bedrock gameplay, including mob behavior and spawning, is processed: check simulation distance and the world’s spawn rules.
  • To make more of the world visible: adjust render distance; visibility alone does not mean mobs are being simulated there.
  • For a Java mob farm: use spawning mechanics and chunk behavior for the exact version, rather than relying on randomTickSpeed.

Why there is no single spawn-distance answer

Mob processing and spawning depend on edition, version, simulation distance, and spawning conditions. The cited Java 25w06a notes give a version-specific radius, while Bedrock documentation describes simulation distance as an adjustable gameplay area. Neither supports one universal numeric spawn or despawn distance for both editions.
