Yes. In ordinary Minecraft play, items dropped when you die can despawn after five minutes—but the countdown starts when the area containing them is loaded, not necessarily at the moment of death. Hazards such as lava can destroy them sooner.
How long do your items stay after you die?
Mojang’s official Minecraft guide, published September 22, 2023, says you have five minutes to retrieve your inventory from when the place where you dropped it is loaded. If the area is not loaded, that five-minute recovery window has not started yet. Once it is loaded, the timer runs, so returning promptly is still the safest approach.
Can anything destroy your items sooner?
Yes. Items that land in lava can be destroyed before the five-minute window ends. That is different from despawning: the timer does not protect dropped items from environmental hazards.
Do all items drop when you die?
Ordinarily, your carried items are left at the death location for recovery. The Minecraft Wiki’s inventory reference notes Curse of Vanishing as an exception: an item with that curse disappears on death instead of being available as an ordinary drop.
