Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYes—while a damaged Mending item is eligible for repair, some of the XP you collect goes toward restoring its durability instead of filling your experience bar. Mending does not reduce the XP produced by an activity or erase it; it trades some immediate level progress for repairs.
How Mending uses XP
Mending activates when you collect XP orbs. Minecraft Help describes it as an enchantment that “Repairs the item when gaining XP orbs,” while Microsoft Learn says the item is repaired “at the cost of experience.” In other words, an orb can restore durability rather than contribute all its experience to your bar.
The Minecraft Wiki’s mechanics reference says each XP point spent repairs two durability points. This is a mechanics description, not a measured estimate of how many levels a player typically loses. The exact visible bar movement depends on the XP collected and how much durability the eligible item needs.
Which items can receive the repair?
A damaged Mending item must be held or worn in an eligible equipment slot when you collect an orb. An item merely stored in your inventory is not selected for repair, according to the Minecraft Wiki’s mechanics reference.
#1 Best Overall
If multiple eligible Mending items are damaged, one is randomly selected for each orb. Any XP left after the repair is applied goes to your experience gauge. As a result, the amount diverted can vary from orb to orb and depends on which items are eligible and how damaged they are.
How to choose between repairs and level progress
| What you need right now | What to do before collecting XP | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Experience-bar progress for levels | Remove damaged Mending items from eligible held or worn slots. | Collected XP goes toward your bar rather than repairing those items. |
| One particular item repaired | Keep that item in an eligible slot and remove other damaged Mending items that could receive repairs. | XP is spent on durability until the selected item no longer needs repair. |
| Both repairs and levels | Leave the gear eligible and collect XP as usual. | Repairs happen first where applicable; leftover XP advances the bar. |
This makes the decision practical: if you need levels for an upcoming enchantment or anvil task, prioritize bar progress; if you need usable gear, let Mending spend XP on repairs.

Why your XP bar may seem to move slowly
If you collect orbs while damaged Mending gear is eligible, some of the orb’s experience may become durability instead of visible bar progress. That can look like missing XP, but it is being spent on repairs. There is no fixed number of levels Mending costs: the result depends on the XP in the orbs and the repair needed.

Check your Minecraft edition and version before troubleshooting. Mojang’s issue tracker documents historical XP-handling fixes for Java Edition in 20w06a and Bedrock Edition in 1.18.30, so edition and version can matter when behavior differs. Those records do not establish that every current version has the same defect; use them as context when reporting an unexpected result.
