It depends on your Minecraft edition: bone meal does not grow sugar cane in Java Edition, but in Bedrock Edition it can grow sugar cane up to three blocks tall.
How bone meal works on sugar cane by edition
| Edition | Does bone meal grow sugar cane? | Documented result |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | No | Bone meal has no growth effect on sugar cane. Mojang’s issue record, MC-73963, marks the behavior as “Works As Intended.” |
| Bedrock Edition | Yes | Bone meal can instantly grow sugar cane up to three blocks tall, according to the Minecraft Wiki’s sugar cane entry. |
What to check if bone meal does nothing
First check whether you are playing Java or Bedrock Edition. In Java, a failed attempt is expected: Mojang’s Java issue record treats the behavior as intended. A separate report for Java 1.21 was marked as a duplicate of that issue, reinforcing that the Java rule differs from Bedrock; it is not a separate official explanation of the mechanic (MC-273993).
In Bedrock, bone meal can raise sugar cane to three blocks tall. The available documentation establishes that edition distinction, but does not verify the behavior against every platform build or future release. Don’t assume a result from one edition applies to the other.
