Yes—Valve still publishes troubleshooting and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) firmware guidance for the discontinued 2015 Steam Controller. That means official help remains available; it does not guarantee repairs, replacement parts, or compatibility with every Steam game. Valve’s support site also has a separate page for its 2026 Steam Controller, so check which generation you own.
What does “support” mean for the old Steam Controller?
Valve’s BLE FAQ identifies its subject as “the discontinued 2015 Steam Controller.” Valve also maintains a troubleshooting guide for that model. These pages provide setup and problem-solving instructions, but they do not establish that Valve will repair a unit, sell replacement parts, or continue supporting it indefinitely.
The generation matters: Valve’s 2015-model BLE FAQ directs users of the new controller to its separate Steam Controller support page. Confirm the model before following setup or troubleshooting instructions.
How can you connect a 2015 Steam Controller?
Valve documents three connection options for the 2015 model: its original wireless receiver, USB, and BLE after the relevant firmware update. Valve recommends the original wireless protocol when available, describing it as the fastest option and stating that one receiver supports up to four controllers.

According to Valve’s BLE FAQ, Bluetooth connectivity is listed for Windows 10 and 11, macOS, Ubuntu, and SteamOS. BLE can be useful for Steam Link streaming to iOS or Android devices, connecting to a tablet or laptop without USB, or when the original receiver is missing. The FAQ was accessed on October 8, 2026; its listed platforms are not a guarantee of compatibility with every host setup.
Does the old Steam Controller work with every Steam game?
No. Steam Big Picture supports the controller, but game-level controller support varies. Valve distinguishes “Full Controller Support” from “Partial Controller Support.” A game marked partial may still require a mouse or keyboard for installation, configuration, or some interface tasks. Check the game’s Steam Store controller-support label before assuming the controller will cover the whole experience.

Controller configuration also depends on the game and the chosen input style. Valve’s legacy configuration guidance says gamepad-only styles work only in games that accept gamepad input. It gives Dota 2 as an example of a game that does not support gamepad input for certain gamepad-only joystick styles. Community configurations may help when a setup does not work, and flexible mappings can assign keyboard, mouse, or gamepad commands—but mappings cannot overcome a game’s underlying limitations.
Can you use the Steam Controller with Steam Link?
Valve lists the Steam Controller as a supported input for its Android Steam Link app, which the support page says works on Android 5.0 and newer. Valve also lists the controller as supported with its Raspberry Pi Steam Link setup when connected by USB or the included wireless dongle. These are specific app and connection statements, not a universal compatibility promise for every device, operating system, or game.

What should you check before keeping or buying a used unit?
- Model: Verify that it is the discontinued 2015 controller, not the 2026 model; their support pages differ.
- Receiver: Check whether the original wireless receiver is included and works. Do not assume a used listing includes one, or that replacement receivers are currently available.
- Connection needs: Decide whether USB or BLE after a firmware update suits your device and use case.
- Host and games: Check the operating system and the controller-support label for the games you intend to play. Some titles may need keyboard or mouse input or a custom configuration.
- Condition: If buttons or haptics fail, follow Valve’s 2015 troubleshooting guide. It recommends checks including Big Picture Mode, opting into the current Steam Beta, enabling the Steam Overlay, and running Steam as administrator; it also describes an input test tool for buttons and haptic feedback.
Valve’s official pages do not confirm current regional availability of 2015-model repairs, parts, or replacement receivers.
