In its September 2026 announcement, Funcom says the full game can be played in single-player, with customizable gameplay settings and optional PvP. That changes the context for the 2025 reviews: PC Gamer’s 80/100 verdict praised the survival and traversal but criticized the grind and endgame of the version it played. The update adds the conclusion of Book One and a rebuilt endgame, but those are publisher-reported features, not a fresh independent review.
What kind of game is Dune: Awakening?
Dune: Awakening is a survival-crafting game set on Arrakis. Its core loop revolves around surviving the desert, gathering resources, crafting equipment and vehicles, and exploring a hostile world. The experience can involve solo play, co-op survival, and PvP, but the balance between those activities has changed since launch.
PC Gamer’s Christopher Livingston reviewed the PC version on June 23, 2025, awarding it 80/100. He described an engrossing survival and crafting game with flawed but engaging endgame systems, praising the danger of the desert, traversal, crafting, and vehicle loops while noting repetitive gathering and grind. That score reflects the 2025 version, not the September 2026 update. In the reviewer’s playthrough, the transition into PvP came after roughly 80 hours; that is one player’s experience, not a standard timetable.
Can you play Dune: Awakening solo or PvE?
Yes. Funcom and Bandai Namco’s September 17, 2026 announcement says the entire game, including its content and features, is available in full single-player mode. The announcement also describes the game as playable entirely in PvE, with PvP optional rather than a mandatory part of progression.

- Play single-player and customize every aspect of your experience, or go online to team up with friends on private or public multiplayer servers
The Deep Desert has separate PvE and PvP instances. The publisher says the PvP instance carries greater risk and reward, so players who want competition can opt into that trade-off rather than being pushed into it by default. Funcom also says players can adjust harvesting rates, death penalties, and experience gain, offering ways to tailor the survival pace.
What changed in the 2026 update?
The September 2026 update adds the conclusion of Book One and reshapes the endgame. Funcom lists new missions and advancement with Atreides or Harkonnen, additional maps and dungeons, weapons, dynamic encounters, Augmentations and Specializations, and refinements to melee combat. These are features reported by the publisher; they do not establish how well the changes work in practice.

The timing matters when weighing older reviews. PC Gamer’s criticism of repetitive resource gathering and its assessment of the endgame are useful accounts of the 2025 game, but they cannot by themselves settle whether the rebuilt 2026 endgame addresses those issues. Funcom Chief Product Officer Scott Junior called the update “undoubtedly the best version yet”; that is the publisher’s promotional assessment, not an independent verdict.
Is Dune: Awakening worth buying?
The answer depends on what you want from a survival game. If you want to explore Arrakis alone or with PvP kept out of the experience, the current single-player and PvE options make the game a better fit than its original multiplayer framing might suggest. Customizable harvesting, death, and experience settings may also suit players who prefer less punishing progression.

If you are buying for the endgame, treat the 2025 review as historical context and the 2026 feature list as a promise of what changed—not proof that the grind or endgame is now satisfying. There is no independent current review or current player-count evidence established here, so neither can support a confident claim about the update’s quality or the game’s present popularity.
The game is available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox following its September 22, 2026 console release, according to the September 17 announcement. Bandai Namco also confirms a physical PS5 edition that includes a disc; distribution varies by region, so check local retailers for current stock, edition details, and price.

PC Gamer’s review system—an Intel Core i7-9700K, RTX 4070 Ti, and 16 GB RAM—is only the setup used for that review, not a performance guarantee for other PCs. The outlet also listed the game as “Playable” on Steam Deck at the time.
