Dementium: The Ward still works best as an atmospheric, compact horror game—not as a modern shooter. The 2023 Nintendo Switch eShop version keeps the sinister hospital and survival-horror mood of the original Nintendo DS game, while replacing its two-screen setup with twin-stick controls. Nintendo Life gave both versions 7/10, praising the atmosphere but noting limitations in story, pacing, or combat.
What is Dementium: The Ward?
Renegade Kid developed Dementium: The Ward as a first-person horror game for Nintendo DS, published by SouthPeak Games. Nintendo Life lists the North American release date as October 31, 2007. Its premise strands an amnesiac protagonist in a disturbing hospital; the player fights monsters and solves puzzles while trying to escape. Nintendo Life’s DS review covers the original release and its place as an unusual first-person shooter for the handheld.

What do the reviews say?
Nintendo DS: atmospheric, but short
Nintendo Life scored the original DS game 7/10. The review highlights the hospital’s atmosphere, but describes a familiar amnesia setup that develops only modestly, with story details delivered through scattered notes. It also calls the experience short. That score represents one outlet’s assessment, not a consensus rating.
Nintendo Switch: a faithful update with dated combat
Nintendo Life’s review of the North American Switch eShop version, published October 11, 2023, also awarded 7/10. It says the port builds on the 2015 Nintendo 3DS remaster and updates the controls for Switch. The reviewer praised the atmosphere, control options, and performance, while criticizing repetitive environments, simplistic enemy encounters, and the absence of gyro aiming. The review’s verdict was that it is “a safe Switch port that successfully replicates as much of the 2015 3DS remaster as possible while updating the controls for a more modern experience.” Read Nintendo Life’s Switch review.

Does it still work as a horror game?
Its strongest case is atmosphere: both Nintendo Life reviews identify that as a key strength. The Switch review also sees the short length as manageable, though the DS review likewise describes the game as brief. Expect a compact trip through a hostile hospital rather than an elaborate story or a deep combat system.
What may feel dated
On Switch, enemies largely rush the player, and the reviewer found the encounters dull and repetitive. That makes the game’s mood more compelling than its shooting. If you want responsive modern action or varied enemy tactics, the Switch review’s criticisms are a useful warning; if a short, eerie setting is the draw, its central appeal remains intact.

Which version should you play?
- Choose the Switch eShop version if you want twin-stick controls and a more current handheld or TV play format. Its control options and reported performance are strengths in Nintendo Life’s review, but it lacks gyro aiming.
- Choose the DS original if the two-screen design and original handheld release are part of the appeal. The original review’s praise for atmosphere applies, but it also flags the short length and limited story.
The available reviews do not establish a universal winner: the Switch edition modernizes how you aim and move, while the DS game is the original form of the experience. The better fit depends on whether you value the original hardware design or contemporary twin-stick controls.
