For a balanced starting point in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, select the Medium or High preset, then adjust the settings that are most likely to trade image quality for performance: Lighting Quality, Volumetric Lighting, Level of Detail, and Post Processing Quality. If you are below your frame-rate target, switch ray tracing off and try the upscaler supported by your GPU. There is no universal best configuration: your results depend on hardware, resolution, VRAM, drivers, and whether you prioritize image quality, frame rate, or responsiveness.

Start with Medium or High, then tune the demanding options

PC Gamer recommends Medium or High as a starting point for a balance of visual quality and performance. Its testing found that the step from Low to Medium made a more noticeable visual difference than changes among the higher presets. If you start with High and performance is uneven, reduce individual settings before dropping everything to Low.

Try lowering these options one at a time, checking both frame rate and image quality after each change:

  • Lighting Quality: lower it if you need more performance and can accept less elaborate lighting.
  • Volumetric Lighting: reduce it if atmospheric effects are not worth the performance cost on your system.
  • Level of Detail: lower it if detailed scenery is affecting performance.
  • Post Processing Quality: reduce it if you are willing to simplify post-processing effects.

BioWare describes adjustable geometry and graphics controls, with many settings changes reflected in real time. That makes a practical tuning loop possible: change one option, inspect the scene, and keep the change only if the performance gain is worth the visual difference. BioWare’s PC features overview also describes the game’s graphics options and upscaling support.

Choose an upscaler for your GPU and image-quality needs

The Veilguard supports NVIDIA DLSS 3, FSR 2.2 modified for the game, and XeSS, according to BioWare. The right choice depends on which option your GPU supports and how the result looks at your output resolution. Begin with a quality-oriented setting, then compare sharper or more aggressive scaling only if you still need performance.

Upscaler Compatibility What to check
NVIDIA DLSS 3 For supported NVIDIA GPUs In PC Gamer’s 1080p comparisons, DLSS retained shadow detail more consistently and showed less pixel crawling than the alternatives it tested. This is an outlet-specific observation, not a universal ranking.
FSR 2.2, modified for the game AMD’s FSR option; support varies by hardware and game configuration PC Gamer observed blurred or missing shadows in its 1080p testing. Check shadow edges and fine details in motion at your own resolution.
XeSS Intel’s upscaling family; support depends on hardware and configuration PC Gamer observed pixel crawling at stronger scaling levels in its 1080p comparisons. Inspect fine details while moving before settling on a setting.

These comparisons come from PC Gamer’s testing, not every GPU, resolution, driver, or game update. Upscaling can also run into diminishing returns: PC Gamer reported CPU-limited cases where stronger upscaling did not produce more performance. If lowering render resolution or using a more aggressive upscaling mode barely changes performance, the GPU may not be the limiting component.

Turn off ray tracing first if you are missing your target

Ray tracing is optional when smooth performance matters more than its visual effects. EA’s specifications overview distinguishes settings for ray tracing on and off and describes ray-tracing features and uncapped frame rates for high-end PCs; it does not establish a frame-rate result for every system. Start with ray tracing off if you are not meeting your target, then enable features selectively and compare the result in the same area.

For a higher-quality approach on a capable PC, PCGamesN’s November 1, 2024 guide recommends High textures and filtering, most quality options at High, selective ray-traced reflections and ambient occlusion, and Ultra Ray Tracing off. It also recommends Motion Blur off. Treat those as that guide’s recommendations rather than guaranteed best settings for all hardware. Its 140% field-of-view suggestion is a preference, not a universal performance adjustment. Read PCGamesN’s settings guide.

Check VRAM and CPU limits before blaming the GPU

A graphics preset can exceed available video memory even when the GPU seems fast enough on paper. In PC Gamer’s testing, a 6 GB RTX 4050 handled Low but ran into VRAM trouble at Medium, especially with frame generation. That result applies to its tested configuration; it does not establish a universal minimum VRAM requirement. If you encounter stutter or instability, try reducing the preset and the demanding options rather than assuming more upscaling will fix a memory limit.

Frame generation can increase the displayed frame count, but that number is not the same as the native render rate and does not guarantee lower input latency. Judge responsiveness as well as the counter, especially in combat. A CPU limit can also cap performance: if the processor is the bottleneck, reducing render resolution may have little effect.

Use benchmarks as context, not a promise

Independent results show why a single graphics-card recommendation or fixed settings recipe can mislead. DSOGaming tested a Ryzen 9 7950X3D with 32 GB of DDR5 on Windows 10, using 2024-era drivers and a range of AMD and NVIDIA GPUs. It used an early area it considered demanding because the game has no built-in benchmark. In that test, GPU demands rose with resolution; at native 4K/Ultra without ray tracing, only the RX 7900 XTX and RTX 4090 exceeded 60 FPS. Those results describe that scene and test configuration, not a guarantee for other areas, current drivers, or every PC. See DSOGaming’s test methodology and results.

EA publishes PC specifications for ray tracing on and off, but its detailed tiers are presented in linked specification imagery. Check the official requirements for your platform and target rather than inferring a hardware tier from a test on someone else’s system. EA’s specifications spotlight.

A practical tuning order

  1. Choose Medium or High. Start with the preset closest to your preferred balance of image quality and performance.
  2. Disable ray tracing if needed. Compare performance with it off before deciding whether its visual effects are worth the cost on your PC.
  3. Select a supported upscaler. Begin with a quality-oriented mode and inspect image stability at your display resolution.
  4. Lower costly settings selectively. Test Lighting Quality, Volumetric Lighting, Level of Detail, and Post Processing Quality one at a time.
  5. Check for a bottleneck. If aggressive upscaling makes little difference, consider CPU limits; if you see memory-related trouble, reduce settings that increase the load rather than relying on frame generation.
  6. Keep the changes that meet your goal. Compare in the same area and consider smoothness and responsiveness, not only the displayed frame count.

If you want tailored settings, the useful details are your GPU, CPU, resolution, and target frame rate. Without those, Medium or High with selective reductions is a starting point—not a promise of a particular frame rate.
