Yes—Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is a strong remake for players who want a traditional, turn-based JRPG with less friction, not a short or radically reworked adventure. Its tablet-driven time-travel structure remains central, while faster combat options, dual vocations, refreshed diorama visuals and a streamlined story aim to make the journey more approachable. TechRadar reviewer Hamish Hector praised the presentation and quality-of-life changes, while warning that the game is still long.
What is Dragon Quest VII Reimagined?
DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined remakes the story of a young fisherman’s son on Estard. The adventure begins with the Shrine of Mysteries and grows into a journey through time to lands sealed away by a hostile force. Square Enix describes the remake as having charming diorama visuals, updated gameplay mechanics and a streamlined story: Square Enix’s official game page.

That streamlining does not remove the game’s defining structure. Rather than following one uninterrupted route, the party pieces together what happened to the world and gradually opens up new places to explore.
How does the tablet-based progression work?
Stone-tablet fragments are the adventure’s main progression key. Find fragments, assemble complete tablets, and use them to unlock locations in the past. The people and problems encountered there can affect the present-day world, tying exploration and side stories back to the larger mystery. Square Enix’s November 12, 2025 media kit describes this fragment-and-tablet loop as a core part of the remake.

- Unravel the mysteries of the past in DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined! Gather your companions and travel beyond the shores of your small kingdom to discover why it is the only remaining island in the world.
- A Diorama Brought to Life - DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined blends a beautiful diorama art style with Akira Toriyama's iconic character designs to make every encounter feel vibrant, heartfelt, and full of adventure. From lush forests and bustling towns to ancient ruins and whimsical monsters, every environment is bursting with color and personality.
- Travel through History to Restore the Present - Scattered stone fragments unlock portals to long-lost eras with their own challenges to solve. Restore the islands, solve mysteries, and make allies in the past to breathe life back into the present.
- A Beloved Tale with a Streamlined Narrative - DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined is told through a series of vignettes with an overarching narrative. The main story has also been streamlined to make the journey more accessible to all players.
- Classic Combat, Improved! - The battle system in DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined has undergone significant changes. Turn the tides of battle with new vocational perks. Each vocation has its own unique ability, from all-out attacks to those that support your allies. Battle speed adjustments and an auto-battle feature are also available. Battles can progress without interruptions between each turn, depending on the tactics selected for the protagonist and allies. While on the field, players can pre-emptively strike monsters and instantly defeat them If the monster is weaker than the party.
The remake also adds an adult-Kiefer storyline. Square Enix says Kiefer can fight alongside the party during this section, giving returning players a new thread to follow rather than simply revisiting familiar events.
What changed in combat and vocations?
Combat remains turn-based, but TechRadar’s Hamish Hector describes several options intended to reduce the time spent on routine encounters: faster animations, auto-battle, and the ability to defeat enemies in the overworld before a battle begins. He also notes Let Loose effects, which add another combat consideration. These are quality-of-life changes around a classic structure, not a switch to action combat.
Vocations—the jobs that shape characters’ abilities—also gain a flexibility option. Hector reports that Moonlighting lets a character use two vocations at once once it unlocks. That offers more room to combine roles, though it arrives as part of a long-form progression system rather than making the game immediately simple.

- Hand-Crafted Aesthetic - The character designs, originally crafted by world-renowned manga artist Akira Toriyama, have been reimagined into a charming 3D art style using dolls actually created in the real world. Environments and dungeons are also brought to life with a unique hand-crafted, diorama-style aesthetic that vividly illustrates the beloved world of the DRAGON QUEST series Enhanced Story - While remaining faithful to the original story, the narrative of DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined has been enhanced to provide a more streamlined story experience. Alongside the main adventure, players can enjoy optional side quests, stories and minigames
Does the remake keep the original’s charm?
For Hector, the toy-like diorama presentation preserves the series’ visual charm and gives the remake a distinctive look. The small-scale, handcrafted feel suits a story built around discovering lost places and seeing how they connect. Square Enix likewise foregrounds the diorama style in its product description.
The trade-off is scale: the game remains a lengthy RPG. Hector praises the presentation and convenience features but cautions that players looking for a short experience may find the commitment substantial. The streamlining makes the journey easier to approach; it does not turn it into a compact adventure.
Is it accessible to newcomers and returning players?
Returning players have the recognizable tablet hunt and turn-based battles, along with a new adult-Kiefer storyline. Newcomers can follow the central mystery without needing to know the earlier game, while combat conveniences reduce some repetition. The game still asks for patience with a sprawling story and a progression loop that unfolds over time.
