Possibly—but that was a forecast, not a confirmed wave of canceled releases. In a March 5, 2025 report, Ars Technica’s Kyle Orland quoted Circana analyst Mat Piscatella warning that publishers might drop physical editions of games exposed to tariffs and release them digitally instead. The story did not establish that any particular game was canceled for that reason, or that its tariff assumptions still apply in October 2026.
What did the March 2025 warning mean?
Piscatella’s point was that a tariff could change the economics of making and distributing a physical edition. If the added cost made a disc release unattractive, a publisher could decide not to manufacture it and offer the game digitally. He wrote: “It wouldn’t surprise me to see physical games that would be subject to tariffs simply not get made, with pubs moving to an all digital strategy.”

That is a conditional prediction. The report did not name games whose physical releases had been canceled because of tariffs, and it did not document a measured drop in physical releases caused by them. The headline’s “may” matters.
Why were physical discs considered exposed?
The 2025 report said game discs were then overwhelmingly produced in Mexico. It described a 25 percent tariff on discs shipped from Mexico as a potential cost for US-bound physical releases. Those details describe the situation as reported in March 2025; they are not a current supply-chain audit or confirmation of today’s applicable rate.

For a publisher, the relevant calculation is not just whether a game can be sold digitally. It is whether expected sales of a physical edition justify production, shipping, and any applicable import costs. A tariff could make a marginal release less worthwhile, while a major release might still sell enough copies to absorb the extra expense. The report did not quantify those product-by-product decisions.
Could tariffs raise game prices instead?
Yes, that was another possibility discussed in the report, not a demonstrated outcome. Analysts said publishers that continued making physical copies might pass some or all of the added costs to customers. Piscatella also suggested digital prices could rise to match physical prices, since publishers often keep non-sale prices aligned across formats.
The report did not show that tariffs had caused realized price increases for games. Nor does the possibility mean every physical game would become more expensive: a publisher could absorb costs, adjust other parts of its business, change how many copies it makes, or decide against a physical edition. Which response makes sense depends on the game and the costs involved.
Why not move disc production to the United States?
Piscatella said bringing production back to the US would require significant investment. He described the physical-disc market segment as “now half what it was in 2021 and declining rapidly,” though the report did not include the underlying Circana series or define how that segment was measured. In his assessment, a shrinking market makes it harder to justify building domestic capacity, and producers would likely need higher prices to recover the investment.

The report also quoted the Consumer Technology Association arguing that completely reshoring technology manufacturing was not practically or economically feasible given the resources and production structures involved. The excerpt identified the statement as coming from an October report but did not specify its year.

No. The same report discussed console manufacturing and imports as adjacent context, but those figures concern hardware, not game discs. It relayed Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad’s estimate that 75 percent of US consoles were imported from China, alongside a 2025 report-era description of a 20 percent China import tariff. It also cited analyst David Gibson’s estimate that 30 percent of PlayStation consoles were manufactured outside China. These attributed estimates do not establish the origin or tariff treatment of any particular game disc.
What tariff applies to a game disc now?
The March 2025 figures should not be treated as current rates. Applicable duties depend on factors including the product’s tariff classification, country of origin, and policy actions in force at the time of import. The US International Trade Commission’s Harmonized Tariff Information page is an official starting point for checking classifications and schedules; it notes that HTS Revision 20 for 2026 was published on September 28, 2026. The Office of the US Trade Representative’s tariff-action index lists subsequent actions. Neither page, by itself, establishes a current game-disc-specific rate.
The 2025 story also quoted the Entertainment Software Association saying tariffs on video-game devices and related products would negatively affect consumers and the industry. That was the trade association’s position, not an independent calculation of the effect on a given game or its price.
