Bayle the Dread is an optional boss at Jagged Peak Summit in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. Reaching him means crossing Jagged Peak; preparing well means improving your Scadutree Blessing, choosing a weapon and defenses that suit your playstyle, and deciding whether to summon Igon. Defeating Bayle awards the Heart of Bayle, which can be exchanged for one of two incantations.
Where to find Bayle the Dread
Bayle waits at Jagged Peak Summit, near the end of the route through Jagged Peak. A useful route outline is to meet Igon, pass through Dragon’s Pit, reach the Grand Altar of Dragon Communion, then continue up the mountain. The route and Igon’s quest steps are detailed in PowerPyx’s Igon quest walkthrough; treat it as a guide rather than an exhaustive, guaranteed route map.
Bayle is optional. You do not need to defeat him to complete the expansion’s main path, but his encounter connects to Igon’s quest and the Dragon Communion rewards.

Raise your Scadutree Blessing if needed
Scadutree Blessings are a practical way to improve your effectiveness in the Realm of Shadow. PC Gamer recommends building blessing strength before attempting Bayle, while PowerPyx suggests 15 or more for its recommended character setup. These are guide recommendations, not entry requirements or guaranteed thresholds. PowerPyx also describes one author’s experience at level 150 without blessings and later at level 187 with 16; that anecdote is not a controlled comparison or a promise of difficulty.

Choose your weapon and defense around your own build
The Dragon-Hunter’s Great Katana is an optional weapon with an anti-dragon effect, and PC Gamer highlights it as a useful choice. It is not mandatory: your existing weapon, upgrades, attributes, and preferred combat range matter. Melee players can focus on openings for head attacks; spellcasters can use range when the arena and Bayle’s attacks allow it. The guides do not establish a controlled comparison showing one approach is best.
Consider fire and lightning defense. PC Gamer recommends prioritizing both, since Bayle’s attacks include substantial elemental threats, especially as the fight escalates. You can also choose whether to fight solo, use spirit summons, or bring Igon if you have progressed his quest.
How to beat Bayle the Dread
The fight has two phases. Bayle becomes more dangerous as the encounter progresses, but the guides differ on when the transition occurs: PC Gamer places it at about two-thirds health, while PowerPyx describes it at around half. Do not rely on an exact health threshold; watch for the transition and adapt to the more demanding second phase.
Phase one: look for head openings
Both PC Gamer and PowerPyx advise targeting Bayle’s head when you can safely reach it. PC Gamer also suggests charged and jumping attacks as ways to seek stagger opportunities. These are tactical suggestions, not a guarantee that any particular attack sequence will stagger him. Avoid trading hits just to reach the head: surviving an opening is more valuable than forcing damage.

Phase two: manage the arena and aerial attacks
In the second phase, fire and lightning area attacks can occupy more of the arena, making positioning and escape space important. PC Gamer advises running away from the aerial beam after locking the camera onto Bayle, and dodging the lightning strike before he lands. PowerPyx also warns of an aerial fire attack in this phase. Treat these as guide-described responses: read the animation and attack direction, and keep room to move rather than getting trapped at the arena’s edge.
Summon Igon and use the Priestess’s blessing
How to summon Igon
Igon is not available automatically. According to the PowerPyx quest walkthrough, defeat the two Jagged Peak Drakes, then speak with Igon to receive Igon’s Furled Finger. Once you reach Bayle’s arena, use Igon’s golden summon sign inside it. If the sign is absent, check that you have completed those quest steps.
Optional help from the Dragon Communion Priestess
The Dragon Communion Priestess can give you the Ancient Dragon’s Blessing. The walkthrough describes it as a one-use item that temporarily reduces incoming damage; speaking with her again can replenish it. It is useful preparation, but the walkthrough does not make it a requirement for progressing Igon’s quest.

PC Gamer reports a reward of around 490,000 runes; this is that guide’s figure, not an independently confirmed official value. Bayle also yields the Heart of Bayle. Take the Heart to the Grand Altar of Dragon Communion to exchange it for either Bayle’s Flame Lightning or Bayle’s Tyranny. PowerPyx says you choose one per playthrough, so consider which incantation better fits your character before making the exchange.
