Edge of Eternity is a single-player fantasy JRPG with turn-based, hex-grid combat, a sibling-led story and striking audiovisual ambitions. It is most appealing if you enjoy tactical positioning and crafting; its narrative pacing and technical polish drew criticism in a 2022 review, so it is not an automatic pick for every RPG fan.
What kind of game is Edge of Eternity?
Developed by Midgar Studio and published by Nacon, Edge of Eternity takes place on Heryon, a world threatened by the Corrosion. Siblings Daryon and Selene set out to find a cure. The official site presents the game as a story of hope and sacrifice built around exploration, companions, crafting and turn-based battles. Is Edge of Eternity turn-based?
Yes. Its battles are turn-based and tactical rather than real-time. In Meristation’s March 12, 2022 review, José María Villalobos describes combat on a hex grid, where positioning, flanking and terrain effects influence encounters. Weapon upgrades and crystals that change weapon abilities add further tactical choices; the grid also appears in puzzles. Story and characters
The premise gives the adventure a clear goal—the siblings’ search for a cure—but Villalobos found the broader plot and its pacing uneven. He considered the protagonists defined, while the story around them did not maintain the same strength throughout. Meristation praised the environments and music, while noting that NPC models were weaker. The official site names Yasunori Mitsuda as a soundtrack contributor. How well does it run?
Meristation reported frame-rate drops and texture pop-in after loading in its 2022 review. Those observations describe that review’s experience; they do not establish current performance on every platform or account for any later patches. The available information does not verify whether those issues have since changed, so check recent player reports for the specific version you plan to play.
What scores and player ratings does it have?
Meristation scored Edge of Eternity 6.7/10 in its March 2022 review. That is one outlet’s assessment, not an overall critic average. Steam documents the PC listing and eight interface or subtitle language options; English and Japanese are listed with full audio. Meristation’s page tags the game for Nintendo Switch, PS4 and PS5, but those tags do not confirm current availability or whether each version is sold physically or digitally. It is a reasonable choice if tactical, grid-based battles, weapon customization and atmospheric presentation matter more to you than consistently paced storytelling or technical refinement. If you want a polished experience above all, or a narrative that stays compelling throughout, the criticisms in Meristation’s review are worth considering. The available evidence points to a game with appealing tactical ideas and uneven execution, rather than a universal recommendation.
