Empire of the Ants is a real-time strategy game with an unusual point of view: you command an insect force from close to the ground, in a photorealistic forest built at ant scale. Its strongest appeal is that presentation and the sense of inhabiting a tiny world; critics have been more divided about strategic complexity. It is best approached as an accessible, visually distinctive strategy adventure—not as a deep systems-heavy RTS.
What kind of strategy game is Empire of the Ants?
Developed by Tower Five and published by Microids, Empire of the Ants released on November 6, 2024. Steam describes it as a photorealistic, third-person real-time strategy game: you command insect forces while viewing the world from an ant’s scale. Its campaign is described as inspired by Bernard Werber’s saga; that wording indicates inspiration, not a claim of close adaptation. Steam’s game listing is the source for the release date and advertised features.

The perspective is more than a camera novelty. Forest terrain, vegetation, and other natural surroundings become the setting for a small-scale conflict, giving the game a visual identity distinct from the overhead battlefield view common to many RTS games. Review excerpts collected by Metacritic likewise point to the striking presentation and unusual ant-scale world as major strengths.
How deep is the strategy?
The main trade-off is approachability versus complexity. The critic excerpts available through Metacritic’s PC review page praise the visual experience but raise concerns that the strategy may not offer enough complex systems for genre veterans. Softpedia’s November 13, 2024 review put the reservation this way: “The strategy game elements work well, although there aren’t many complex systems to master, while platforming feels unnecessary.” That is one critic’s assessment, not a universal verdict.

- Embark on a fantastic journey through an infinitely small universe and lead your colony into a hopeful future.
- Experience an extraordinary adventure - Play a brave ant from a third-person perspective and discover unique skills that help you in battle and exploration.
- A 3D real-time strategy game with increasing difficulty
- The game features numerous maps in a photorealistic forest backdrop to explore.
- Photorealistic - Unreal Engine 5 extends the boundaries of photorealistic effect on plants and animals.
Exploration and platforming sit alongside tactical combat, so the game is not solely about issuing battlefield orders. That mix may suit players who want variety and an immersive setting, but platforming may feel like a distraction to someone seeking a tightly focused, highly systemic RTS. If intricate long-term strategy is your main criterion, the available reviews suggest tempering expectations.
What modes can you play?
Steam lists a solo campaign, offline skirmishes against AI, and online PvP. The PvP options include ranked one-versus-one matchmaking and free-for-all matches; Steam also lists cross-platform multiplayer. These are distinct from cooperative play.

A Steam listing excerpt for the Swarm Together update describes solo or co-op Horde Mode, a Story Challenge Mode that replays six missions with scores, and two-player co-op against two AI colonies. Mode availability can vary by platform or edition, and store descriptions can change. Check the listing for the version you intend to play rather than assuming every mode is available everywhere.
Steam estimates the campaign at 20 hours. Treat that as a publisher/store estimate, not a measured completion time. The listed campaign and offline skirmishes also mean the game can be played solo; online PvP and the update’s co-op options are additional ways to play, not prerequisites for the single-player experience.

What do reviews say?
Metacritic’s PC critic page showed a 72 Metascore from 15 reviews in an October 2026 snapshot: eight positive, seven mixed, and none negative. The page aggregates critic opinions; it is not a gameplay test or a guarantee that an individual player will agree. GameStar’s November 18, 2024 excerpt captures the qualified praise: “The beautiful Empire of the Ants is more than just exceptional graphics, but it can’t reach its full potential.”
Metacritic’s user-review overview includes selected comments praising the visuals, simple charm, and worldbuilding. Those comments offer examples of player reactions, not a representative survey. Review totals and storefront ratings can change over time, so a dated snapshot should not be mistaken for a live score.

Will Empire of the Ants run on your PC?
The figures below are the PC requirements Steam lists, not independently benchmarked performance results. Meeting minimum requirements does not establish a particular frame rate, resolution, or graphics setting; the listing does not provide those guarantees.
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit | Windows 10/11 64-bit |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-9400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 | Intel Core i5-9600 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | 6 GB VRAM; GTX 1060 or RX 580 class | RTX 3080 or Radeon RX 6800 |
| DirectX | Version 12 | Not stated in Steam’s recommended specification |
| Storage | 40 GB; SSD recommended | Not stated separately in Steam’s recommended specification |
Steam’s listing gives 40 GB as the storage requirement and recommends an SSD. Compare your PC with the exact CPU and graphics requirements as well as memory and operating system; the listed graphics cards are useful reference points, not a promise of performance on every machine with similar hardware. Check the current Steam specifications before installing, since store information may be updated.
Who is Empire of the Ants for?
- A good fit: players drawn to photorealistic environments, an unusual insect-scale perspective, and a campaign that combines tactical combat with exploration and platforming.
- Potentially less satisfying: RTS veterans looking primarily for extensive strategic systems, or players who dislike platforming mixed into a strategy game.
- Worth checking first: players choosing chiefly for a particular co-op mode or platform should verify that the mode is listed for their edition.
For a view from the ratings rather than a personal performance test, see Metacritic’s critic reviews and user-review overview. The key decision is whether its compelling visual perspective and approachable tactical play outweigh the possibility of less strategic depth than you expect from an RTS.
