There is no single fix for a generic multiplayer session-join error: it can come from a game or platform outage, your connection, a mismatch with one player, or a game-specific setting such as Cross Play or firewall access. Check service status first, run your platform’s connection test, then work through the reversible checks below before changing router settings.
1. Check whether the game or platform is having an outage
Check the official service-status pages for the game and the platform you are playing on. If maintenance or an outage is posted, wait until it is resolved and try again. Status pages and troubleshooting steps differ by game, so use the support page for the exact title rather than assuming a general network fix will help.
2. Record the error and test your connection
Before changing settings, note the exact error text or code, the game version if shown, your platform, and whether the problem happens with every player or only one. Ask the other player whether they can join other sessions; this helps distinguish a one-friend issue from a broader connection problem.
Run the platform’s built-in internet or network test and record its results. On Switch 2 and Switch, Nintendo recommends noting NAT type, download speed, and upload speed. Nintendo’s test labels NAT from A, the best result for peer-to-peer communication, to F, which cannot complete peer-to-peer communication. These grades describe Nintendo’s test only; other platforms use different labels and interpretations. Nintendo’s matchmaking troubleshooting explains its test and results.
#1 Best Overall
- Blazing-fast WiFi 7 boosts tri-band throughput up to 12000 Mbps with 320 MHz channels of 6 GHz band, Multi-Link Operation (MLO) and 4K-QAM
- Powerful wired network capacity of up to 20G with one 2.5G WAN port and seven 2.5G LAN ports.

- Smart Home Master makes it easy to set up functional subnetwork (up to 3 SSIDs) for IoT devices and VPNs
- ROG-exclusive Gaming Network streamlines Triple-Level Game Acceleration setup and connections through convenient SSIDs
3. Try low-risk fixes first
- Restart the game and device. Close and reopen the game, then restart the console or PC. Nintendo specifically recommends restarting the console for error 2321-4992.
- Check for updates. Install available game and system updates. Confirm that you and the other player meet the game’s version and multiplayer requirements.
- Check the game’s access requirements. Look at the title’s official instructions for any account, subscription, privacy, or multiplayer requirements; they vary by game and platform.
- Test again after each change. Changing one thing at a time makes it easier to identify what helped. Nintendo advises testing the connection after changes to the console or network environment.
If you are playing over Wi-Fi
For the diagnostic test, move closer to the router and reduce obstacles or nearby electronics that may interfere with the signal. Nintendo’s guidance for Switch error 2321-4992 suggests a distance of 3–5 metres (10–15 feet) and trying another supported 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz band. These are Switch-specific suggestions, not universal requirements or guaranteed fixes. See Nintendo’s guidance for error 2321-4992.
4. Find out whether the issue is limited to one player
If you can join other players but not one particular friend, ask that friend to check the game and platform status and run their own connection test. Nintendo notes that a problem limited to one specific player may be related to that player’s network. If you cannot join anyone, keep checking your own network, firewall, router, and service status; a failure with everyone does not by itself prove that your network is the cause.

- Beyond-fast WiFi 7 (802.11be) with new 320MHz channels in the 6 GHz band and 4096-QAM significantly increases network capacity and throughput, with speeds of up to 30 Gbps
- Multi-link Operation links to multiple bands at the same time to ensure stable internet connections and efficient data transfers
- Cutting-edge external dual-feeding antennas boost coverage by providing high efficiency and significantly enhanced signal strength
- Maximized wired connectivity and flexibility with dual 10G ports and quad 2.5G ports
- Triple-Level Game Acceleration - The GT-BE98 Pro boosts your PC gaming traffic every step of the way, from your PC gaming port all the way to the game server.
For a wired Nintendo setup, the official troubleshooting guide suggests connecting directly to the modem to bypass other networking equipment and trying another Ethernet cable to check for damage. Treat these as targeted diagnostic tests, not routine fixes for every session error.
5. Check Cross Play and firewall access
Cross Play
If players are on different platforms, confirm that the game supports that platform combination and that Cross Play settings are compatible. The exact rules vary by title. For example, Bungie says that in Destiny, Xbox and PlayStation players with Cross Play disabled cannot join fireteams with players who have it enabled—even when the players are on the same platform. Check Bungie’s Destiny SQUID error guidance for that game-specific case.

Firewall
On Steam, check that your firewall allows both the Steam client and the relevant game executable, especially if the problem began after an update. Steam advises granting the required permissions and says, “We do not recommend leaving your firewall disabled.” Do not leave a firewall turned off as a workaround. See Steam’s firewall guidance.
6. Treat router changes as an advanced, game-specific step
If the platform test points to a NAT or network restriction, follow instructions for the exact game and platform, or ask your router manufacturer or ISP for help. Do not copy port numbers from another game or platform: NAT categories and required network settings are not universal.

For Destiny, Bungie says UPnP can help with certain connection problems and describes port forwarding as an alternative when UPnP cannot be used. Its guide warns that incorrect router changes can disrupt internet access or router access, and that opening ports can reduce network security. Follow Bungie’s Destiny networking guide only for Destiny, and do not enable UPnP and port forwarding together in the circumstances described there.

If the error persists after the checks above, contact the game’s official support with the exact error, platform, game version, connection-test results, and whether the problem affects one player or all players. If the test points to a router or ISP issue, share those results with the router manufacturer or ISP. Include the changes you already tried so support can help narrow down the cause.
