Firewatch is a single-player, first-person mystery set in Wyoming in 1989. You play Henry, a fire lookout whose only regular contact is his supervisor, Delilah, over a handheld radio. When a strange event draws him away from his tower, the game’s exploration, conversations, and unfolding relationship become the heart of the experience. Whether it is worth playing depends on how much you enjoy atmosphere, dialogue, and a story-led pace.

What is Firewatch about?

Henry takes a lookout job in the Wyoming wilderness after retreating from his personal life. From his tower he speaks with Delilah, the supervisor assigned to guide him by radio. A strange event sends Henry into the forest, where exploration and conversation gradually shape the mystery. The game’s story is set in 1989.

Firewatch was developed by Campo Santo, published by Campo Santo and Panic, and released on February 9, 2016. Steam’s game listing describes it as a single-player, first-person mystery.

Is Firewatch worth playing?

It is a strong fit for players who want a focused narrative experience built around atmosphere, exploration, and character conversations rather than a broad set of action systems. The central pleasure is spending time in the wilderness while learning more through what Henry and Delilah say to each other and how the situation develops.

Runaway Parade Games Fire Tower Board Game Deluxe Edition
  • EASY TO SET UP, EASY TO LEARN: Fire Tower takes seconds to set up and minutes to learn. The game is highly accessible because of its intuitive rules and visual instructions that show how each card works.
  • UNIQUE THEME AND GAMEPLAY: Fire Tower brings players into a unique world of competitive firefighting. Use real firefighting techniques to defend your tower from the growing flames and take control of nature to send the fire towards your opponents to claim victory. Each turn, you must spread the fire in the direction of the wind and then play one of your action cards. Extinguish the blaze with fire engines, dispatch smoke jumpers, and build firebreaks. Harness the destructive force of nature to spread the flames away from your tower and towards your opponents.
  • STRATEGIC AND FAST-PACED with HIGH REPLAYABILITY: Fire Tower takes 15-30 minutes to play. Every turn is a tense decision, as players must adjust to changing conditions in the forest and the plans of their opponents. Downtime is minimal, and players stay in the game even after their towers are destroyed, continuing to play as the vengeful Shadow of the Wood with special powers and a new path to victory. Try playing free-for-all or battle in teams of two to change up the strategy of the game.
  • VIBRANT ARTWORK AND COMPONENTS: The game features original watercolors by fine artist Kevin Ruelle. The vivid colors perfectly match the beautiful, unique components and create a highly tactile experience that fully immerses players in the theme of the game. The game’s deluxe components include 135 glimmering fire gems, a printed cloth bag, custom meeples, an engraved wind die, and more.
  • THE PERFECT GIFT: This game is a great gift for gamers, teens, adults and kids. It’s easy to introduce to new players, but has enough strategic depth to engage gamers as well, making it the perfect fit for family game night, Thanksgiving, or your next weekly get-together.

Consider these questions when deciding whether its approach suits you:

  • Do you enjoy exploration-led pacing? Much of the experience is spent moving through the forest and taking in the setting, with the story unfolding along the way.
  • Are dialogue and characterization a draw? Henry and Delilah’s radio conversations are central, so the game’s appeal depends in part on how much you enjoy listening to and interpreting character interactions.
  • Do you want a story with a satisfying payoff? The mystery is a major reason to continue, but reviewers have not agreed on how well the story delivers. Go in for the atmosphere and unfolding experience, not an assumed universal verdict on its conclusion.

What do players and critics think?

Player ratings and professional reviews are different kinds of evidence, and neither should be mistaken for a unanimous judgment.

Steam user reviews

In a Steam search result captured in 2026, 89% of 56,856 English-language user reviews were positive, and Steam labeled the summary “Very Positive.” This is a changing audience metric, not a critic score; the percentage and review count can shift over time. See the Steam listing for the current summary.

Professional reviews

Individual critics have emphasized different strengths and weaknesses. GameSpot’s review page names Scott Butterworth and shows a score of 7. TIME’s review praises the atmosphere while characterizing the story as “So-So.” These are separate responses, not a single critical consensus.

Is Firewatch a walking simulator?

It is reasonable to describe Firewatch as exploration-led: you travel through the wilderness on foot while the mystery and conversations develop. But the label “walking simulator” can mean different things to different players. The more useful question is whether you want a game whose emphasis is on moving through a carefully presented setting and following a narrative, rather than pursuing a combat-focused or systems-heavy challenge.

Who is Firewatch for, and what is its content like?

Steam describes it as a single-player first-person mystery and includes this content note: “A Note: Firewatch is a video game about adults having adult conversations about adult things.” The PlayStation listing names drug and alcohol references, nudity, strong language, and suggestive themes. Ratings and content descriptors can vary by region, so check the local platform listing if you need current guidance.

Where can you get the game and soundtrack?

Steam lists a digital copy of the game, along with a game-and-soundtrack bundle and the Firewatch Original Soundtrack as downloadable content. Availability and prices can vary by date and region. Campo Santo’s official FAQ says the original soundtrack can be bought digitally on Bandcamp or Steam; Steam credits composer Chris Remo.

Can you stream or make a Let’s Play?

Campo Santo’s official FAQ says, “Streaming and Let’s Plays are implicit but revokable privileges,” and says the studio would prefer its games not be used to spread hate or harassment. Because the permission is described as revokable, creators should check the current FAQ before relying on it.
