Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is out now, bringing the 2003 PlayStation 2 horror game into the present with updated presentation and new gameplay systems. Mio and Mayu’s story and the Camera Obscura remain at its center, while new camera functions, mechanics, locations, side stories and an ending give this version more than a visual overhaul.
What is Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake?
It is a full remake of the second game in the Fatal Frame series, originally released for PlayStation 2 in 2003. The story follows twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura into Minakami Village. When Mayu disappears, Mio searches for her in a place haunted by wraiths, using the Camera Obscura to photograph and seal them. Koei Tecmo’s official product page and launch announcement describe the remake and its premise.
What stays the same—and what changes?
The remake preserves the original’s defining combination of survival horror and ghost photography: taking pictures with the Camera Obscura is still how Mio attacks wraiths. The sisters’ relationship and their search through Minakami Village remain the narrative core.
Koei Tecmo says it has updated graphics, sound, gameplay systems and controls. The Camera Obscura gains focus, zoom and filter functions, as well as Special Shots. The remake also adds locations, side stories and a new ending featuring “Utsushie,” composed by Tsuki Amano. These are additions to the original framework, not a replacement for its central camera-combat idea.

#1 Best Overall
- Experience the definitive version of the chilling classic, completely overhauled to deliver a deeper and more intense survival horror experience in the Minakami Village.
- The revamped sound offers spatial audio that will immerse players deep into the action, allowing them to enjoy a more authentic experience. Not only will they hear and feel the presence of spirits more intensely, but wraiths will appear when least expected, such as trying to grab the protagonist’s hands when reaching for an item or waiting in the shadows. Players will have to react quickly to escape these attacks. Failure to do so will inflict Willpower Damage, leading directly to intense combat.
- The gameplay mechanics of the Camera Obscura, a signature feature of the FATAL FRAME franchise, have also been reworked to offer a more intense and rich experience during combat and exploration. Players will still be able to attack wraiths by taking photos, but managing to align the focus point with their target will inflict more damage. If the damage dealt exceeds a certain threshold, players will be able to activate Shutter Chance state, where they will then be able to deal significant damage with one single picture within a brief period – making it crucial for fans to be precise and to perfectly time their shot.
- To confront the spirits lurking in the shadows of Minakami Village, players will be able to rely on new Camera Obscura features such as focus, zoom and filters. By lighting up the focus points on the screen, players will focus on their target and deal more damage to the spirits if they manage to light more focus points. By using the zoom feature, players will be able to attack a spirit from a distance while taking cover and being undetected and will also be able to attack multiple targets at once by zooming out. The zoom of the Camera Obscura will also help players during exploration as they will be able to photograph specific objects.
- The filters will help players to unravel the mysteries around them by changing filters depending on the situation or wraith they encounter. Among the different filters they can use, the Paraceptual Filter will allow them to increase their shooting distance in combat and, when exploring, to reproduce past actions using the residual memories.
How do the new gameplay mechanics work?
- Hold Mayu’s hand: Mio can hold her sister’s hand to restore Health and Spirit Power, tying recovery to the twins’ connection.
- Equip charms: Charms provide another system for adjusting or supporting play.
- Photograph Twin Dolls: Taking pictures of these collectibles earns points that can be exchanged for items.
- Use the expanded camera: Focus, zoom, filters and Special Shots build on the familiar process of framing ghosts and photographing them in combat.
The free demo’s save data can transfer to the full game, according to Koei Tecmo’s product information.
Does the remake improve on the original?
It is clearly more than a resolution or texture update: the presentation, controls and systems have been reworked, and the story has new content. Whether those changes make it a better experience will depend partly on how a player responds to the revised mechanics.

In a post-release PC review published March 16, 2026, TechRadar’s Dashiell Wood praised the atmosphere, character models, narrative and production values, and considered the dodge mechanic an improvement. He also found rough edges in other changes and described the difficulty as inconsistent. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a platform-wide comparison or a consensus verdict. Wood said he played close to twenty hours on PC with a DualSense controller; his experience does not establish how the game performs on other platforms.
