Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If your Xbox controller feels harder to aim with, moves when you are not touching the stick, or no longer centers properly after firmware 5.23.5.0, start by checking the input in the Xbox Accessories app. The reports connect these symptoms with the update, but the available sources do not establish that Microsoft confirmed a 5.23.5.0 dead-zone defect or published a definitive fix. Use the steps below to separate an input or calibration problem from possible stick wear, then report persistent symptoms with your controller details.
What the reported dead-zone glitch looks like
Players have described poor fine control, unexpected thumbstick movement, scrolling without input, and movement that stops and starts or behaves oddly on diagonals. PCWorld reported complaints after firmware 5.23.5.0 on March 4, 2025, including unintended stick movement, disconnections, and incorrect button activations. A Reddit user also described difficulty making micro-adjustments after updating five Microsoft controllers on February 14, 2025. These are reports, not controlled tests or proof that the update caused every symptom.
A Microsoft Q&A user described upward input and trouble centering in August 2026, but the post does not establish that the controllers were running 5.23.5.0. A moderator’s diagnostic guidance is still useful, but that discussion does not confirm a firmware incident. In the sources available, Microsoft has not specifically confirmed a 5.23.5.0 dead-zone defect or documented a definitive fix.
Check the controller and reproduce the input first
Before changing settings or assuming the stick is damaged, verify which controller is affected and whether the symptom appears in the app’s test screen. A Microsoft external staff moderator recommended checking the controller model and firmware, then reproducing the movement in the Xbox Accessories app thumbstick test.

- Identify the controller. Note its model and the firmware version shown in Xbox Accessories.
- Open the thumbstick test. In the Xbox Accessories app, select the controller and use its thumbstick test screen. Watch whether the on-screen input moves, fails to center, or jumps while the stick is untouched.
- Compare the symptom with gameplay. If the test shows the same movement, record that result. If the test looks normal but a particular game behaves incorrectly, the issue may be specific to that game’s input settings rather than a demonstrated controller dead-zone fault.
- Record what changed. Note when the symptom began, the controller model and firmware, whether it affects one or multiple controllers, and what the test screen shows.
Try Xbox’s calibration tool for minor inconsistent response
Xbox introduced a guided thumbstick self-calibration feature in the Xbox Accessories app in February 2024. Xbox says it can help with minor problems such as inconsistent responses, but it does not resolve every issue, including drift caused by normal wear. The feature predates firmware 5.23.5.0; Xbox’s announcement is guidance about calibration generally, not a confirmed patch for this update.
If the stick test suggests inconsistent response rather than clear physical damage, follow the app’s guided calibration flow and retest. Calibration is a diagnostic or limited corrective step, not proof that the update was responsible and not a guaranteed cure. Xbox’s April 3, 2024 Insider Alpha notes also mention earlier thumbstick calibration improvements in a controller firmware update; those notes do not identify 5.23.5.0 or show that it resolved the later reports.

Report persistent symptoms with useful details
If the problem began after an update and remains reproducible—especially across multiple controllers—use Xbox Accessories or Xbox Support to report it. The Microsoft moderator’s September 1, 2026 advice was specific to that Q&A case, rather than a formal incident notice, but it offers a practical report checklist:
- Controller model and firmware version
- When the symptom began and whether it followed an update
- Whether one or several controllers are affected
- What happens in the Accessories app thumbstick test, including whether the stick centers when untouched
- Whether calibration changed the behavior
Do not assume a downgrade or a later firmware version will fix it: the sources here do not establish a supported downgrade procedure or name a later release that resolves this reported behavior.

When repair or a second controller makes sense
Consider hardware repair only when the symptoms and inspection point to wear or physical damage. Xbox says replacement parts are available for self-repair, while also cautioning that calibration cannot fix every wear-related problem. Parts address a hardware diagnosis; they are not an evidenced remedy for a firmware-caused fault.
A second controller can be a temporary fallback if the affected one is unusable. PCWorld described switching controllers as a stopgap, not as a verified fix. If the underlying cause is software, another controller may show the same behavior, so replacing one should not be the first troubleshooting step.
