For a silent failure with no error message, check the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime and Windows system files. These are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes: different launch failures can have different causes.
Start with the symptom
- Play returns to its normal state and no window appears: check requirements and game files first, then test without overlays. If there is still no error, continue to the Visual C++ and Windows repair checks below.
- Steam reports “Missing Executable”: restart Steam and verify the game files. Steam Support says a corrupted file or failed download can be involved; contact Steam Support if its recommended checks do not resolve the error.
- The game appears to be compiling shaders: this can take time rather than indicating a failed launch. Borderlands Support estimates about 10 minutes on most PCs; if compilation takes unusually long, reboot and try again.
Borderlands Support’s PC troubleshooting guide was updated October 6, 2026. Its shader estimate is not a guarantee for every PC, and a long compile by itself does not confirm a crash.

Check that your PC and installation are ready
Compare your PC with the official requirements
Borderlands Support lists Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit), DirectX 12, 16 GB RAM, and an SSD with 100 GB available as minimum requirements. The listed minimum-performance target is 1080p at 30 FPS on Low settings. The recommended configuration targets 1440p at 60 FPS on Medium settings.

These specifications and performance targets come from Borderlands Support’s PC System Requirements page, updated May 29, 2026. If your PC is below a minimum requirement, 2K says it cannot guarantee the game will run. Check which requirement is missing before considering hardware changes; an SSD is relevant only if your current storage or available space does not meet the stated requirement.

Restart and let Steam finish updating
Exit and reopen Steam, restart the PC, and confirm Borderlands 4 has finished downloading or updating before trying again. If Steam is still applying an update, a launch attempt may not reflect the completed installation.
Verify the game files
- Open Steam Library.
- Right-click Borderlands 4 and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and let Steam complete the check.
Borderlands Support recommends verification because missing or damaged files can prevent the game from launching. It is a sensible first repair before reinstalling.
Test for overlay or background-software conflicts
Temporarily disable overlays and close non-essential background programs, then try launching again. Borderlands Support specifically names Steam Overlay, Discord, GeForce Experience, and MSI Afterburner as examples that can contribute to performance issues or crashes.
- In Steam, open Steam > Settings > In-Game and turn off the Steam Overlay for the test.
- Turn off other enabled overlays and close non-essential programs, including any of the examples above that you use.
- Try to launch the game. If it works, re-enable items one at a time and test again to identify whether one of them is involved.
This isolates possible conflicts; it does not establish that any particular program is the cause of your problem.

If Play produces no error, check Windows components
A 2K support post updated September 14, 2025, addresses games that do not launch after selecting Play and show no error. Its steps are useful for that specific symptom, but they do not prove a missing runtime or damaged Windows files are responsible for every silent failure.
Check the Visual C++ runtime
Confirm that Microsoft Visual C++ 2015–2022 Redistributable (x64) is installed. If you need the installer, get it through Microsoft’s official distribution channel rather than an unofficial download site.
Run Windows image and system-file checks
If the silent launch problem persists, 2K’s support guidance recommends running these commands from an elevated Windows Terminal or Command Prompt. Open the terminal as an administrator; run the DISM command first, then System File Checker, and restart Windows after they finish.

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthsfc /scannow
These commands check and repair Windows components and system files; they are not Borderlands-specific diagnostics. If the issue remains, gather DxDiag and MSinfo reports for a support request.

Borderlands Support also lists administrator mode, Windows 10 compatibility mode, and a security-software exception for the game folder as possible troubleshooting options. Treat them as targeted tests after the basic checks, not routine launch fixes.
- Try running the game as administrator only if ordinary launch attempts fail.
- Windows 10 compatibility mode is a test setting, not a blanket recommendation for all Windows 10 or 11 PCs.
- Consider an antivirus exception only when there is reason to suspect security software is blocking game files. Do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled.
If a test makes no difference, undo the setting rather than leaving unnecessary exceptions or compatibility changes in place.
When to reinstall or contact support
Reinstalling is a later option if Steam verification and the targeted checks do not help. Before taking that step, note the exact symptom and error text; a reinstall is not a guaranteed fix for software conflicts, unmet requirements, or Windows issues.
Check the Borderlands Issue Tracker for a known issue, then submit a support ticket if the problem remains. Include:
- Whether Play returns to the button, an error appears, or shader compilation seems stalled.
- The exact error text or code, if there is one, and when the problem began.
- Recent game, Windows, or graphics-driver changes that may be relevant.
- DxDiag and MSinfo files if requested by support.
For an explicit missing-executable message, Steam Support is also an appropriate escalation if restarting Steam and verifying the installation do not resolve it.
