The name can mean the reusable Free/Libre Action Roleplaying Engine (FLARE) or Flare: Empyrean Campaign, the dark-fantasy game built with it. The official site compares its gameplay at a broad genre level to the Diablo series; Flare is its own project, not a claim of equivalence to those games.
What is Flare?
FLARE is an engine intentionally focused on single-player 2D action RPGs rather than a general-purpose game engine. The project develops games with it while reusing shared engine code. That distinction matters when browsing the project: the engine provides the runtime, while a campaign supplies the playable game content. The official Flare site describes the project and its open-source focus.
What is Empyrean Campaign?
Flare: Empyrean Campaign is the team’s playable game made with the FLARE engine. Its repository describes it as a single-player 2D action RPG with fast-paced action and a dark-fantasy style. The Diablo comparison is useful only as a high-level genre reference; it does not mean the projects share a developer, setting, or game content. The game repository identifies the campaign and explains its relationship to the engine.
How do you download and play Flare?
As of October 8, 2026, the official downloads page labels version 1.15 as the latest release. It lists a Windows installer and ZIP bundle, a Linux x86_64 AppImage, an Intel Mac disk image, an Android engine APK, and separate source downloads for the engine and game. The page links to GitHub, SourceForge, and itch.io as download hosts. Availability and version labels can change, so check the official downloads page for the current options.

The page also says version 1.14 can be played in a browser, while version 1.15 exceeds itch.io’s web-game file-size limit. These are version-specific details from the page at the date above, not a promise that the same browser option will remain available.
For the simplest setup, use an engine-and-game bundle where one is offered. The game repository also documents installing the engine and campaign mods separately, and recommends pairing the game data with the latest engine. In that setup, the engine alone is not the campaign: you need the game content as well.

How does Flare support modding?
Modding is part of the project’s design. Much of the game data is stored in simple INI-style configuration files, and the project favors open formats such as PNG for images and OGG for audio. Maps are edited with Tiled. These choices make game content more accessible to inspect and modify than data stored only in a proprietary editor format, although they do not make every aspect of game development automatic. The campaign repository describes the data and map workflow; the engine README explains the engine’s role and points to community mods.
What is open source, and what can you reuse?
Flare has different licenses for its code and its campaign content, so check the component before copying, modifying, or distributing anything.

Flare is a good fit for players looking for a digitally distributed, single-player 2D action RPG with a dark-fantasy campaign, and for developers interested in an engine built specifically around that genre. Its editable data and modding support also make it relevant to people who want to explore or create campaign content. It is not a general-purpose engine, and the campaign and engine should not be mistaken for the same component.
