HoYoverse’s Character Archive is a roster tool for sorting and filtering characters available in the current version, not a ranking.
This Version 7.1 guide explains what a useful ranking should compare and how to decide who to build. It does not assign ten character placements: the available dated sources establish ranking methods and recent guide updates, but do not substantiate ten individual evaluations. Naming a ranked ten without checking each character’s current guide would give a false impression of certainty.
Why there is no single best-character list
Characters do different jobs. A Main DPS, Sub DPS and Support cannot be compared fairly by peak damage alone: one may deal damage on field, another may contribute while off field, and a third may strengthen or protect the team. A character’s value also changes with the other characters you own and the teams you can build.
HoYoverse’s Character Archive helps players sort and filter the current-version roster. It does not designate the strongest characters. Tier lists are editorial assessments, and their results depend on the roles and criteria they choose.

What a useful ranking should compare
Icy Veins’ Version 7.1 list, updated September 23, 2026, separates Main DPS, Sub DPS and Support, and says it considers damage, ease of play, elemental application, team buffs and usage breadth. Those are that publisher’s criteria, not an official HoYoverse formula.
- Role fit: Compare a character with others doing a similar job, rather than treating every unit as a damage dealer.
- Team contribution: Consider damage, elemental application, buffs and defensive utility together. A character’s value can come from enabling teammates, not just personal damage.
- Ease and consistency: A demanding setup or narrow window can affect how reliably a character performs in ordinary play.
- Versatility: Consider how many teams or situations a character supports, separately from the peak performance a specialist reaches in a particular team.
- Comparable investment: A fair general ranking should assess characters at reasonably similar investment, rather than comparing a highly invested specialist with a minimally built support.
How to choose whom to build first
- Start with the team you want to play. Identify whether you need an on-field damage dealer, off-field damage, elemental application, buffs or defensive support.
- Check the character’s current build and team guidance. KeqingMains organizes character resources around builds, artifacts, weapons and teams. - Compare the character with your available alternatives. A high placement on a general list cannot tell you whether a character fills a missing role in your particular roster.
- Factor in how you like to play. Ease, consistency and team fit matter when deciding what to invest in; a ranking cannot account for your preferences.
How to use Version 7.1 rankings
Read a tier list as an editorial snapshot, not a permanent verdict. Icy Veins’ Version 7.1 list is dated September 23, 2026; character guides were still receiving Version 7.1 Phase I updates in early October. Check the date and version on any ranking or build guide you use, and revisit it after major version changes.

When a list gives a single order across different roles, look for its stated assumptions: what content it evaluates, how much it values versatility versus specialized performance, and whether it compares characters at similar investment. Without those details, a placement is difficult to apply to your account.
