PlayStation Network and Xbox Live suffered outages over Christmas 2014, disrupting sign-ins and online play. Lizard Squad claimed responsibility, and contemporary reports described a suspected denial-of-service attack—but Sony and Microsoft did not initially confirm that the group caused it. Both networks were reported back online by December 29.
What happened to PlayStation Network and Xbox Live?
Both gaming networks experienced outages around Christmas 2014, spanning several days and affecting some players’ ability to sign in and use online gaming and entertainment services. The timing was especially frustrating for people setting up new consoles received as holiday gifts. Contemporary coverage described the disruption as a suspected distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack: a flood of traffic intended to make a service difficult to access. The Guardian’s December 26 report covered the outages and the group’s claim of responsibility.
The phrase “takes down” captures the effect players experienced, but it does not settle who generated the traffic. Lizard Squad said it was responsible; that claim is distinct from independently established attribution.
Did Lizard Squad take down Xbox Live and PSN?
The group claimed it did, but the companies’ initial public statements did not confirm that explanation. ABC News reported that Sony and Microsoft were investigating and had not blamed hackers at that stage. CBS later quoted cybersecurity expert Brian Krebs cautioning that people claiming credit could be “guilty of nothing more than taking credit for other peoples’ crimes.” Krebs also said Lizard Squad was not necessarily a sophisticated hacker group. CBS’s December 29 account reported those comments alongside the restoration news.

In January 2015, TIME reported that an 18-year-old had been arrested in England on suspicion of offenses connected with the holiday denial-of-service attacks. The report also described swatting allegations and said the regional crime unit had worked with the FBI. An arrest on suspicion is not a conviction; these reports do not establish a final court outcome or a definitive account of the group’s membership.
When did PlayStation Network and Xbox Live come back online?
By December 29, 2014, both Sony and Microsoft said their networks were back up and running, according to CBS. PlayStation’s update, quoted in that report, said the network had faced “artificially high levels of traffic designed to disrupt connectivity and online gameplay.” Sony said the temporary issue was not caused by new owners’ consoles. The restoration report attributed some lingering connection trouble to players rushing back online; that was the explanation reported at the time, not a separately measured cause.

What did Sony offer affected PlayStation users?
On January 2, 2015, TIME reported two Sony offers: five extra days for PlayStation Plus memberships or trials active on December 25, and a 10% discount on the total of a PlayStation Store cart purchase during January. These were Sony offers; the reviewed reporting does not establish that Microsoft provided equivalent compensation.
Was this the Sony Pictures cyberattack?
No. The gaming-network outages were a disruption to online services. They should not be conflated with the separate Sony Pictures computer intrusion and confidential-information leak reported that month. The accounts covered here do not establish that the incidents were the same event.

What the contemporary reports establish—and what they do not
The reports document outages, a DDoS-style attack explanation, Lizard Squad’s claim, service restoration, an arrest on suspicion, and Sony’s customer offers. They do not establish a verified attack volume, a precise number of affected players, financial losses, a definitive attribution, or a final legal disposition. No technical postmortem or court record in these sources resolves those questions.
