Here, “Guardian” means the Guardian news publisher, Guardian News & Media and its parent group—not another organisation with the same name. The Guardian says the Scott Trust is the sole shareholder of Guardian Media Group and exists to secure the publisher’s financial and editorial independence. Its publishing history began in Manchester in 1821; today its output includes the Guardian website and newspaper, Guardian Weekly, international editions and books by Guardian writers.
What is the Guardian?
The Guardian is a news publisher whose outlets include the Guardian website and newspaper. Guardian News & Media publishes those outlets, as well as Guardian editions in the US and Australia and the magazine Guardian Weekly, according to the publisher’s history page. The Guardian also publishes books by its writers under the Guardian/Faber imprint.
The name can refer to other organisations. This article uses it for the Guardian news publisher.
Who owns the Guardian?
The Guardian describes its ownership structure as comprising the Scott Trust, the Scott Trust Endowment and Guardian Media Group (GMG). It identifies the Scott Trust as GMG’s sole shareholder and says the Trust’s purpose is to secure the Guardian’s financial and editorial independence. The publisher says surplus financial returns are reinvested in journalism. These are the Guardian’s descriptions of its governance and purpose, rather than an independent assessment of how those aims are achieved. Guardian: About

How does Guardian content licensing work?
Organisations seeking to use Guardian material can enquire about content feeds, bespoke offerings, one-off licences or longer-term arrangements. The licensing page names newspapers and magazines, education providers, database and archive services, digital platforms, publishers, broadcasters and brands among potential customers. It also describes text and digitised archives extending back to the 1800s. Guardian Licensing: Our products
