Halo Infinite’s final year in Official Halo Championship Series (HCS) competition was 2025, ending when a world champion was crowned at Halo World Championship. That does not mean Halo Infinite tournaments or in-game support stopped: Halo Studios announced plans to support competition in 2026, while saying official HCS competition for a new Halo title would not return that year. A later HCS schedule or successor game has not been established by the cited announcements.
What does leaving the HCS mean?
Halo Studios said it would retire Halo Infinite from Official HCS Competition after the 2025 Halo World Championship. Esports Lead Tashi explained the shift: “As the studio continues to shift more and more towards the next era of Halo, we feel this is the right time for Official HCS Competition to move on from Halo Infinite.” (Halo Studios’ Halo Infinite Esports Update.)

This is a change to the official HCS circuit, not a declaration that every Halo Infinite tournament, ranked playlist, or form of game support is ending. Halo Studios said it would continue supporting Halo Infinite competition in 2026, including online and LAN events, alongside side events for Halo 5 and Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC).
What was planned for Halo competition in 2026?
Halo Studios’ 2026 update named several kinds of events and organizers. They did not all have the same relationship to HCS: some were partner-run competitions with HCS support, while others were team-backed or grassroots events. (Halo Studios’ Halo Esports 2026 Update.)

| Event type | What Halo Studios announced | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| DreamHack competitions | Two events across North America and Europe, with a $100,000 prize pool, according to Halo Studios’ 2025 announcement. The plan also described an open bracket, travel awards for top teams, and HCS equipment, prize and travel support. | DreamHack would own and run the events; HCS would partner and contribute support. The announcement’s planned details should not be treated as confirmation that every event or commitment remains current. |
| Team-backed events | Competitions involving Cloud9, FaZe, Shopify and Spacestation. | These were partner-team events, distinct from a single official HCS league schedule. |
| Grassroots online events | Events with LVT and European Halo League. | These broadened the competitive calendar beyond LAN events and HCS-owned competition. |
| HCS Invitational at Halo Fest | An invitational planned for Halo Fest 2026. | An invitational is not the same format as an open bracket. Halo Studios tied Halo Fest to the franchise’s 25th anniversary, not to the announcement of a successor game or new HCS season. |
These plans describe a 2026 competitive ecosystem rather than a direct replacement season for the official Halo Infinite HCS circuit. Event ownership, entry format and the kind of HCS support vary, so the presence of HCS funding or equipment does not by itself make a partner event an official HCS season.
When will official HCS competition return?
Halo Studios explicitly said a new-title official HCS competition would not return in 2026. Tashi wrote: “So, when will Official HCS competition return for a new title? While we look forward to the day, it will not be in 2026.” The announcement did not give a later return date or identify which game would anchor that competition.
That leaves the timing open. An event calendar for Halo Infinite, legacy-game side events, or partner tournaments should not be mistaken for confirmation of the next official HCS season.

What is known about the next Halo game?
In a September 22, 2026 Xbox Wire post, Matt Booty said Activision would develop the next Halo title through a new, purpose-built team, separate from ongoing development and Call of Duty plans. He also said a small Halo Studios team would continue supporting the Halo community and games already in-market. (Xbox Wire: Continuing Our Reset.)
The announcement concerns development responsibility; it does not specify a reveal or release date, multiplayer design, esports format, or HCS schedule. It therefore cannot establish that the next Halo title will be the next competitive HCS game, or when official competition might resume.
Does Halo Infinite still have ranked play and updates?
Halo Support’s November 18, 2025 patch notes called Operation: Infinite the game’s final Operation Pass and listed planned ranked-playlist rotations and rank resets extending into 2026 and 2027. Those plans show that ending official HCS competition was not presented as an immediate end to all in-game activity. Playlist schedules can change; the notes are a plan, not a guarantee that every rotation will occur as listed. (Halo Support: Operation: Infinite Patch Notes.)
