Halo’s official tribute also acknowledged his death and said he was reported to have passed away earlier in the month at 81. The publisher’s author biography lists his years as 1945–2026, but does not provide exact birth or death dates. The family statement and Halo tribute do not state a cause of death.
What did Dietz write for Halo?
Dietz wrote Halo: The Flood, published in 2003 as a novelization of Halo: Combat Evolved. Halo’s tribute describes the book as a distinctive entry in the series: it retells and expands the game’s events through the perspectives of characters beyond the player-controlled Master Chief.

That approach gave readers another way to experience the first game’s story, while broadening the view of its events. The novel remains Dietz’s principal contribution to the Halo universe.
What else did he write?
Dietz’s career extended well beyond Halo. His work included novels tied to other entertainment franchises as well as original fiction. Simon & Schuster’s author biography describes a bibliography of more than sixty novels.
