As of October 2026, Activision’s new purpose-built team is developing the next Halo title. Halo Studios is no longer identified as the team making that game: Xbox says a small Halo Studios team will support existing games and the community. The title, release date, story, gameplay and platforms have not been announced in the official sources reviewed.
What changed in the next Halo game’s development?
On September 22, 2026, Xbox announced that Activision would develop the next Halo title with a new team created specifically for the project. Xbox described the team as separate from ongoing development and Call of Duty plans. Halo Studios, meanwhile, will retain a small team to support games already in market and the Halo community. Xbox’s announcement does not identify the new game or give a release window.

This is the clearest current answer to “What’s next for Halo?”: a change in who is developing the next title, not a reveal of the title itself. The October material now appearing on Halo Waypoint concerns Halo Studios’ earlier plans and should not be read as a preview or promise about Activision’s game.
What did Halo Studios reveal in 2024?
On October 6, 2024, Halo Studios announced a new studio identity and said its future games were being built with Unreal Engine 5. It also said it was working on multiple projects, without naming them. Studio head Pierre Hintze described the moment as a new chapter; COO Elizabeth Van Wyck said the way the studio had made Halo games before did not necessarily suit how it wanted to make games in the future. The Halo Waypoint announcement framed this as a shift in technology and development approach, not a named next-game announcement.

Project Foundry was not a game announcement
Project Foundry was a multidisciplinary research effort and training tool, not a new game or a conventional tech demo. Xbox Wire quoted art director Chris Matthews describing its ethos as the opposite of a traditional tech demo. Hintze said the studio intended for most of the work showcased in Foundry to inform projects then in development or future projects. That was an expression of intent in 2024; it does not confirm that any particular Foundry concept will appear in Activision’s next Halo game. What is in the October 2026 Halo material?
The October 2026 Halo Waypoint Canon Fodder issue gives lore and concept details associated with Halo Studios’ earlier vision. These include a containment facility on Zeta Halo and an “ancient, terrible creature” held in a timelock cage. The issue’s historian’s note says the material was prepared before the studio news and commentary was added afterward.
GamesRadar describes the concepts as part of Halo Studios’ vision for its version of a seventh mainline Halo game. That makes the material useful as a glimpse of a previous creative direction, but it is not evidence that Activision’s new team will use the same setting, creature, plot, or concepts. What has not been announced about the next game?
Xbox’s September 2026 announcement does not establish the next title’s name, release date, plot, gameplay or platform list. The 2024 Foundry comments and the 2026 concept material do not fill those gaps: they concern Halo Studios’ earlier work, not confirmed details of Activision’s project. Until the new team or Xbox announces specifics, claims that the next game will continue a particular story or use a particular concept remain unconfirmed.

2026 marks Halo’s 25th anniversary. Halo Waypoint has scheduled Halo Fest for December 11–13 in Seattle: a concert at Benaroya Hall on December 11, followed by a convention at the Seattle Convention Center Summit Building on December 12–13. Halo: Campaign Evolved is a separate release, not the still-unnamed next title. Xbox’s June 2026 showcase recap included it among games with release-date and gameplay announcements, and the October Canon Fodder issue describes it as having released at the end of July.
