If Halo: Combat Evolved is crashing on your Steam Deck, there is no documented fix that covers every crash. Halo Support has identified a narrower issue involving Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) during campaign missions; for other problems, start with Valve’s general Steam Deck troubleshooting steps and use the symptom details to narrow the cause.
First, check whether the EAC issue matches your symptoms
Halo Support’s known-issues page lists an Easy Anti-Cheat issue for Halo: Combat Evolved campaign missions on Steam Deck when EAC is enabled. The notice says players may see EAC error messages; it also lists possible loss of connection to online services and missed achievements.
The notice is specific: it does not say EAC causes every crash, freeze, or failure to launch. It is associated with the page’s issue list dated February 28, 2025, for build 1.3495.0. Check the current Halo Support page for any changed status. If your problem is an EAC message during a campaign mission, that is the closest documented match. If the game simply closes or will not launch, the notice does not establish the cause.
Try Valve’s troubleshooting steps in order
These are general recommendations for Steam Deck instability, not a guaranteed Halo-specific repair. Make one change at a time and retest so you can tell whether it affected the problem.

- Update and restart. Install any available Steam Deck software updates, then restart from the Steam Deck’s power menu. Valve recommends updating and restarting as initial troubleshooting for instability. See the Steam Deck Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide.
- Temporarily disable third-party apps. Exit or disable apps you installed through Desktop Mode, then launch the game again. This can help determine whether another application is interfering with a Steam app; it is not a confirmed Halo fix. Valve discusses this in its software troubleshooting guide and basic-use troubleshooting guide.
- Check the current compatibility information. Look at the game’s current Steam Store or Library entry. Valve’s Deck Verified categories are Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown. Playable can mean some manual configuration is needed; Unsupported means the title is currently not considered playable. Ratings and reviews are ongoing, and the sources here do not establish a current rating for Halo: The Master Chief Collection or this game entry. Read Valve’s Steam Deck Verified explanation rather than relying on an old rating.
- Test a different Proton compatibility tool. In Steam, open the game’s Properties > Compatibility, enable the option to force a Steam Play compatibility tool, and try the latest Proton version. Retest the game, then note which tool you selected. Valve recommends trying the latest Proton version in its software troubleshooting guide. This is a diagnostic step, not evidence that Proton is responsible for your crash or that a particular version fixes it. SteamOS is Linux-based, and Proton provides a compatibility layer for running Windows games; that context explains why the setting matters, but does not identify the cause of an individual failure. - Lower graphics settings if the issue looks performance-related. If you experience slowdowns or instability under load, try lowering the graphics preset or individual settings. Valve recommends reducing graphics settings where appropriate. This step is aimed at reducing system load; it should not be treated as a fix for an EAC error or every hard crash. If it still crashes, capture the details before contacting support
Valve directs users to Steam Support when general troubleshooting does not resolve instability. Use its Steam Support page and include details that make the problem easier to distinguish from the documented EAC issue:
- Where the crash happens: on launch, during a particular campaign mission, in multiplayer, or at another point.
- The exact error text, if any, and whether it mentions Easy Anti-Cheat.
- The game version or build, if visible, and your SteamOS version.
- Whether EAC was enabled and which Proton compatibility tool was selected.
- Whether the problem occurs in campaign, multiplayer, or both.
Those details do not guarantee a diagnosis, but they give support a clearer account than “the game crashes.”
