Before shutdown, reports of Portkeys “not working” described several different problems: trouble navigating the Portkey scene, an unresponsive “Use Now” button, or walking distance that Adventure Sync did not reliably record. The historical fixes and reports below apply to the game as it existed then.
Why Portkey problems had more than one cause
“Portkey not working” could mean a player could not interact with the Portkey environment, could not activate the “Use Now” control, or was not accumulating the distance required for a Portkey Portmanteau. Those symptoms involved different game features; the historical sources do not establish one common cause or a failure rate.
Portkey scene or gyroscope interaction
In January 2020, a player reported that the hand in the Portkey scene kept pointing toward the bottom of the screen while they tried to find the boot. A commenter suggested changing the preference for using the gyroscope with Portkeys. This was a player-suggested workaround, not an officially confirmed fix for all devices or all Portkey problems. Read the player discussion.
A December 18, 2019, version 2.8.0 release-note post reproduced in a community archive announced an option to pan around Portkey environments without moving the device gyroscope. That setting addressed how players looked around; it should not be confused with the separate “Use Now” permission issue. See the version 2.8.0 release-note post.

“Use Now” button did not respond
The same version 2.8.0 release notes said the update fixed an unresponsive Portkey “Use Now” button when camera permissions had not been granted. This was a specific historical software fix, not evidence that every failure to open a Portkey had the same cause. Read the archived release notes.
Adventure Sync did not count Portkey distance
Version 2.9.0 materials described Adventure Sync as recording distance for Portkey Portmanteaus while the game was closed. The feature’s January 2020 announcement also listed known issues affecting particular devices or conditions:

A separate Android player discussion from April 3, 2021, described inconsistent Adventure Sync distance updates and delays.
