Henk Rogers’s role in Tetris was not simply spotting a hit game: he recognized its international potential, then negotiated a crucial piece of its complicated licensing story. After discovering Tetris at the 1988 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, he secured Japanese rights. In 1989, he went to Moscow and obtained handheld distribution rights from ELORG for Nintendo’s Game Boy. There he met Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov, beginning a relationship that later became a business partnership.
Who was Henk Rogers before Tetris?
Rogers was already a game publisher in Japan when Tetris came to his attention. He founded Bullet-Proof Software and developed and published The Black Onyx, which the Tetris corporate biography says became Japan’s number-one game in 1984. That background mattered: Rogers was not encountering the game as a casual player, but as a publisher looking for software with the potential to travel across platforms and markets.
According to Rogers’s official biography and Tetris’s corporate biography, he discovered Tetris at CES in Las Vegas in 1988. He licensed Japanese rights and published the game on several personal-computer platforms and Nintendo Famicom. The later Moscow negotiations were a separate chapter, not a blanket acquisition of every Tetris right.
Why did Tetris rights lead Rogers to Moscow?
Tetris’s distribution involved different rights for different platforms. The distinction is central to the story: Rogers had Japanese rights, but the 1989 negotiation he undertook in Moscow concerned handheld distribution rights for the Game Boy. The Tetris corporate biography says he subsequently licensed those Game Boy rights to Nintendo.

Rogers’s official timeline describes ELORG as the Soviet organization responsible for importing and exporting computer software and as the agent for the USSR Academy of Sciences’ Computing Center, which held a license from Pajitnov. This explains why negotiating with ELORG mattered, while also making clear that ELORG’s role should not be casually treated as ownership of every version and platform right.
What happened in the Moscow negotiation?
Rogers traveled to Moscow in 1989 and secured Game Boy distribution rights from ELORG, according to his official biography. The historical account described by the Federal Court opinion says Rogers proposed Tetris as a Game Boy pack-in to help the system appeal to a broader audience. That detail is the court opinion’s summary of a book and film account, rather than a substitute for the underlying memoir.

The rights Rogers secured were consequential because they connected Tetris with Nintendo’s handheld system, but the precise claim is important: the negotiation concerned handheld/Game Boy distribution, not all Tetris rights everywhere. Rogers met Pajitnov during the trip. Their relationship continued beyond the negotiation, and later business ties included The Tetris Company.
How did Rogers and Pajitnov’s relationship continue?
The Tetris corporate biography describes Rogers and Pajitnov as having a continuing relationship and identifies their connection with The Tetris Company. Rogers’s official timeline says Blue Planet Software and The Tetris Company were founded in 1995 and 1996, respectively, after the Computing Center license expired and ELORG asserted control. The Tetris corporate biography characterizes The Tetris Company as the exclusive source of Tetris licenses.

Those later developments help explain why the story is more than a dramatic trip to Moscow: it became a long-running business relationship around the game’s licensing. The timeline is about a changing set of agreements and organizations, not one simple transfer of all rights in a single meeting.
How accurate is the 2023 movie Tetris?
Apple describes its film, released March 31, 2023, as based on a true story and presents it as a Cold War-era thriller about Rogers and Pajitnov. That framing means the film draws on real people and events; it does not establish that every scene happened exactly as shown.

Screenwriter Noah Pink made that distinction directly in a PBS NewsHour interview: “Some of, you know, the external antagonism that is introduced in the movie is a little bit of a fabrication on top of the reality.” Pink said the aim was to preserve emotional truth, particularly for the characters. His comment supports a specific qualification about some invented external conflict, not a claim that every alteration in the film has been catalogued or verified.

The Perfect Game: Tetris: From Russia with Love is Rogers’s memoir. The official Tetris announcement says it covers his life, The Black Onyx, his journey through Tetris rights, and his sustainability work. In that announcement, Rogers described his aim as offering readers an “honest, non-Hollywood perspective” on his life story; that is his stated intention for the book, not an independent assessment of its accuracy.

In a 2025 GamesBeat interview, Rogers said he did not recognize some scenes when he read the film script and explained that he wrote the memoir to set down his perspective beyond the movie. The book is therefore useful as a first-person account of how Rogers remembers the events, while remaining a memoir rather than neutral adjudication of a complicated licensing history.

The real story behind Tetris, in brief
Rogers brought a Japanese publishing background to Tetris, discovered it at CES in 1988, and secured Japanese rights. His 1989 Moscow trip resulted in Game Boy handheld distribution rights from ELORG, and it was also when he met Pajitnov. The film retells that history for drama; Rogers’s memoir adds his own perspective on the people, negotiations, and life behind the game.
