Highguard is unplayable because its online service shut down on March 12, 2026—not because a surge of popularity temporarily overwhelmed its servers. Wildlight Entertainment announced the permanent closure on March 3, saying it had not built a sustainable player base to support the game long term. Game Developer and PC Gamer reported the announcement.
Is Highguard down for maintenance, or has it shut down?
Highguard is no longer available as a live online game. Wildlight announced on March 3, 2026 that it would permanently shut the game down on March 12; that date has passed. This is a shutdown, not a temporary maintenance window or a matchmaking outage.
Wildlight said it had not built a sustainable player base to support the game long term. The company also said more than two million players had tried Highguard. That figure is total reach since launch, not a count of players online at the time of closure.
Did Highguard shut down because it was too popular?
No. The large number of people who tried the game does not show that it had a sustainable audience or business. Reach, player engagement and the ability to fund ongoing development are different measures.

On March 4, 2026, studio head Chad Grenier reported an average session duration of 91 minutes and 3.48 matches per session. PC Gamer reported those figures and Grenier’s comment: “Not enough revenue to keep anyone employed to work on it, unfortunately.” The engagement numbers are Grenier’s reported figures; they do not by themselves establish why the game failed to sustain a business.
Wildlight’s stated explanation was that the player base was not sustainable. Grenier separately cited insufficient revenue to keep staff working on the game. Those are the explanations the company and its studio head gave; they do not establish that a particular outage, surge, or single design choice caused the closure.

Why won’t Highguard launch on PC?
If you are trying an old PC troubleshooting step, it cannot restore the service. Highguard’s official support documentation addressed historical launch and loading problems, not current server availability. It noted that some older CPUs lack the required AVX and F16C instruction support and recommended an SSD for faster loading. Highguard Support
Those checks may explain a past PC launch issue, but they do not bring Highguard’s online servers back. A PC, console, controller, headset or other peripheral cannot restore access to a discontinued online service.
