Hermen Hulst did not leave PlayStation: he continued as CEO of SIE’s Studio Business Group and reports to Nishino. Sony announced the change on January 29, 2025, moving company-wide leadership to Nishino while keeping Hulst in charge of the studio business.
What changed in PlayStation leadership?
Sony’s January 29, 2025 announcement named Nishino SIE’s President and CEO, effective April 1, 2025. Before the change, Nishino led the Platform Business Group and Hulst led the Studio Business Group. Under the new structure, Nishino took the company-wide role and Hulst continued to lead the Studio Business Group, reporting to him. Sony’s announcement quoted Nishino, then CEO of the Platform Business Group: “I am truly honored to take the helm at Sony Interactive Entertainment.”
Did Hermen Hulst leave PlayStation?
No. Hulst remained at SIE as CEO of the Studio Business Group. He stopped sharing the company-wide top leadership arrangement, but the announcement did not say he was leaving Sony or PlayStation Studios. His role is distinct from Nishino’s: Hulst leads the studio business, while Nishino leads SIE as a whole.
Who is the CEO of PlayStation now?
Nishino is President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment. Sony’s executive roster, marked as of July 1, 2026, lists Nishino in that role and Hulst as CEO of the Studio Business Group. Sony’s June 5, 2026 investor-relations Q&A also identifies them in those positions. Sony’s executive roster and the 2026 Game & Network Services Q&A therefore show the arrangement remained in place in those official records.

What does Nishino’s appointment mean for PlayStation Studios?
It establishes a reporting structure: the Studio Business Group remains under Hulst’s leadership, with Hulst reporting to SIE President and CEO Nishino. Sony’s announcement sets out titles and reporting lines; it does not establish that the change caused a shift in game output, studio strategy, or commercial performance.
Sony reported over 93 million PS5 units and 125 million monthly active user accounts as of March 2026 in its June 5, 2026 Game & Network Services Q&A. Those company-reported figures provide scale context, not a measure of the leadership change’s effects.
