For docked play, start with the exact controller version, its connection method, and whether you want offset or symmetrical sticks, rear buttons, or a charging dock. The five options below are differentiated choices—not a tested ranking: reliable comparative testing for latency, comfort, battery life, and durability is not established here.
What to check before choosing a Steam Deck controller
Valve lists Bluetooth 5.3 support for controllers, accessories and audio on the Steam Deck OLED specifications. This confirms support for the controller category, not identical behavior for every controller, mode, revision, or extra feature. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for the exact model and connection mode you plan to use.
- Connection: Bluetooth is convenient for a wireless setup. If a controller also offers a 2.4 GHz receiver or wired mode, verify support for that mode specifically; Bluetooth compatibility does not establish how another mode works.
- Stick layout: Offset sticks place the left stick above the directional pad; symmetrical sticks put both sticks at a similar height. This is a preference, not a compatibility distinction.
- Extra buttons: Rear buttons can be useful when you want more inputs without moving your thumbs from the sticks. Confirm whether Steam Input can bind them over your chosen connection.
- Dock and receiver: An included charging dock or wireless receiver can suit a particular desk or TV setup, but those accessories do not prove broader compatibility.
- Deck Verified: Valve’s Verified rating describes a game’s compatibility with Steam Deck, not certification of a particular external controller. See Valve’s Steam Deck Verified explanation.
Five differentiated controller options
These options are organized by documented compatibility and practical features, not by performance scores. Manufacturer compatibility claims and Valve’s documented Steam Input behavior are cited where available; where a feature is not established by the cited material, it is not presented as a fact.
1. 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller — the clearest documented choice for Bluetooth back-button mapping
8BitDo lists the Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller on its Steam compatibility page. More specifically, Valve’s June 9, 2025 beta client notes say Steam Input can bind this controller’s paddles and L4/R4 buttons when it is connected by Bluetooth. That is useful, specific support evidence for someone who wants configurable extra inputs in a wireless setup. It should not be generalized to other Ultimate versions or connection modes. Consult the Ultimate 2 product page for the exact model’s current specifications.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
2. 8BitDo Ultimate Bluetooth Controller with Charging Dock — for buyers who want the dock
This is a separate product from the Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller. 8BitDo says the Ultimate Bluetooth Controller with Charging Dock is compatible with Steam Deck and describes its charging dock and back buttons. Choose it if that specific dock-equipped model fits your setup; do not assume that the compatibility statement or features automatically apply to the Ultimate 2 or an Ultimate 2.4G variant.
3. An 8BitDo controller listed for Steam — for shoppers comparing the manufacturer’s other compatible models
8BitDo’s Steam compatibility page lists the Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller and other 8BitDo products, and provides mode instructions for pairing 8BitDo controllers with Steam. This makes the page a useful starting point if neither of the two specifically described Ultimate models suits your layout or accessory preferences. Check the exact product listing and pairing instructions before buying: a family-level compatibility page is not proof that every model, revision, or mode supports every feature.

4. A Bluetooth controller you already own — the practical no-extra-purchase option
If you already have a Bluetooth game controller, it may be worth trying before buying another. Valve’s Bluetooth specification establishes category-level controller support, but it does not guarantee that a particular controller’s extra buttons, pairing process, or every operating mode will work as desired. Verify the controller’s model and instructions, then test the controls you rely on in your own games.
5. A wired or receiver-based controller — for setups where you prefer a direct connection
A wired connection or a controller’s 2.4 GHz receiver may be convenient in a docked setup, but the Bluetooth support listed in Valve’s specifications does not confirm that either mode works for a particular product. Treat this as a connection-style preference, not a blanket Steam Deck recommendation: confirm that the exact controller supports Steam Deck in the mode you intend to use, and check whether its receiver or cable suits your dock arrangement.

How to make a model-specific choice
- Decide how you will connect. Choose Bluetooth, wired, or a receiver-based mode based on your setup. Look for compatibility evidence for that exact mode, rather than relying on a general Bluetooth statement.
- Choose the layout you prefer. Compare the controller’s stick placement and button arrangement with what feels familiar to you; layout preference does not establish better performance.
- Check any extra inputs you need. If rear buttons matter, confirm whether they can be configured on Steam Deck over your chosen connection. The documented Bluetooth binding evidence in this guide applies specifically to the Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller.
- Confirm the complete model name. Similar names can refer to distinct products with different connection methods and included accessories. Match the model name on the listing to its manufacturer page.
- Pair and configure using the product’s instructions. 8BitDo provides Steam pairing guidance on its compatibility page. After connection, check Steam Input and verify your intended controls in a game; do not assume a Deck Verified game rating certifies the controller.
What the available evidence does not establish
The cited compatibility pages and release notes support specific compatibility statements, but they do not establish a measured winner for latency, comfort, battery life, or durability across these options. Nor do they support an objective top-five ranking across all controllers on the market. Treat the choices here as a shortlist organized around documented compatibility, connection, layout, and accessories—not as results from hands-on testing.
