How can guards find out about a crime?
There is more than one way for a crime to create trouble. A witness may react or report what they saw, and guards may investigate or challenge Henry later; a guard does not have to catch the act in person for there to be risk. Patch 1.4 also describes improvements to pursuing guards’ investigation direction and to the spread of crime information at Maleshov.

It also notes that extreme behavior can result in Henry being branded. - Check the in-game crime indicator before and after a questionable action.
- Remember that witnesses may report an act after the moment has passed; being unseen by a guard is not proof that there is no risk.
- Consider whether carrying stolen goods could expose Henry to confiscation if searched, while keeping the patch 1.4 Thief’s Eye exception in mind.
- Choose how to respond to a guard based on the immediate cost and the risk of escalation, rather than assuming one option always works.
- Account for potential later social effects: serious hidden wrongdoing may change guard and merchant reactions.
Crime mechanics have been adjusted in updates, including investigation behavior and crime resolution. The cited sources do not support fixed heat-decay periods, universal identification rules, detection distances, or numerical punishment thresholds; those should not be treated as guaranteed mechanics.
