A team’s tier reflects its roster’s skill, with more weight given to its strongest players. It sets the opponents the team faces and its lock-in window—not a permanent rank for any player.
How Riot assigns Clash tiers
Riot describes two related measures: individual tier inputs and the team’s tier. Individual tier is based on a player’s Flex or Solo/Duo ranking. Riot then considers the ranks of the team’s members, weighting the highest-skilled players more heavily than the rest of the roster. As a result, a team with one particularly strong player may be placed higher than a simple average of its members’ ranks would suggest.

Riot does not publish a formula, player-by-player weights, or rank cutoffs. Visible ranks alone therefore cannot reliably predict a team’s tier; the tier shown in the client is the authoritative placement.
Why a high-ranked teammate can affect the whole team
Because the strongest players carry more weight, a roster with widely varying skill levels can receive a higher tier than its lower-ranked members expect. Riot also cautions that teams with large skill differences may face tougher matches. Adding or removing a player can change the displayed team tier, but the public guidance is not detailed enough to calculate the new result in advance.

How Clash placement MMR fits in
Riot says tournament placement uses a player’s Clash MMR from the previous season. If the player did not play Clash in that season, Riot uses Ranked MMR instead. Riot’s FAQ also says players who were unranked last season cannot participate. These placement inputs are not a published equation for converting a current roster’s visible ranks into a team tier.
Riot says more players are in Tier IV than in the other tiers. That describes the overall distribution; it does not predict the tier of a particular team.

What your team’s tier changes
- Opponents: The tier determines the tier of teams you are matched against. Riot says teams from different tiers do not meet during the same Clash weekend.
- Lock-in timing: Tier IV opens first, followed by Tier III, Tier II, and Tier I. Riot notes that in SEA regions all tiers can lock in one hour before Clash begins. Timing can vary by region or event, so check the current event details in the client for the applicable window.
- Weekend placement: Your team keeps its tier for the duration of the weekend, although the displayed tier can adjust if players are added or removed before play.
How to check your team’s tier
- Open the current Clash event in the League of Legends client.
- Review the team’s displayed tier and the event’s lock-in details. Use the client’s current information for your region rather than relying on a clock time from a past event.
- If the roster changes, check the displayed tier again; Riot says adding or removing members can adjust it.
For Riot’s official explanation of tier assignment and event rules, see the Clash FAQ (updated May 7, 2026).
