There is no separate Steam Deck setting called “Controller Mode” in Valve’s support instructions. If you mean using the built-in controls on the desktop, switch to Desktop Mode; if you mean returning to the standard Steam Deck interface, choose Return to Gaming Mode. You can also change the controller layout for an individual game.
Use the built-in controls in Desktop Mode
Valve says Steam Deck inputs are available to apps and games in SteamOS Desktop Mode while Steam is running. To switch to the desktop:
- Open the Steam menu.
- Select Power.
- Select Switch to Desktop.
For basic desktop navigation, the right trackpad moves the pointer, R2 performs a left-click, and L2 performs a right-click. See Valve’s Steam Deck Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide and Steam Deck and Steam Machine Desktop FAQ.
Return to Gaming Mode
On the desktop, select Return to Gaming Mode. Valve also lists logging off through the system menus as a way to leave Desktop Mode. Gaming Mode is Valve’s name for the standard Steam Deck interface.
