GamesRadar+ reported 39,356 players online at once on Sunday, August 24, after a new record above 20,000 the preceding Friday. SteamCharts later recorded higher monthly peaks: 69,675 in August and 95,428 in September. These are historical Steam concurrency figures—not counts of unique people returning to the game.
Why “two weeks” was the story in August 2025
Team Cherry set off the countdown on August 19, 2025, writing, “Join us in 48 hours for a special announcement about Hollow Knight: Silksong!” (Team Cherry’s August 19 announcement.) On August 21, the studio revealed the release date: September 4, 2025. Its post invited players to “ascend to the peak of a haunted kingdom” on launch day (Team Cherry’s release-date announcement).
That made the release two weeks away in the immediate aftermath of the reveal. The countdown is now a past event: Team Cherry announced on September 4, 2025, “Hollow Knight: Silksong is available now!” (Team Cherry’s launch post).
How much did Hollow Knight’s Steam audience grow?
The available figures capture different moments and measures, so they should not be collapsed into a single “returning players” count.

The August 24 figure was a contemporaneous snapshot, not the eventual August monthly peak. SteamCharts is a third-party tracker, and its numbers describe concurrent Steam activity—not all-platform play or total sales. The historical peaks also do not describe the game’s current live audience.
Did the release-date reveal cause players to return?
The timing and contemporary coverage connect the rise with anticipation for Silksong. PC Gamer’s August 22 report described players revisiting Hallownest for nostalgia or to refresh their memories before the sequel. GamesRadar+ likewise framed the growing Steam count as players heading back ahead of launch.

That is a plausible reading of the timing, not proof of individual motives or sole causation. Concurrent-player statistics count how many Steam users are playing at the same time; they do not identify whether someone is a first-time player or a returning one. The cited reports do not provide a representative player survey, a count of unique returners, or an analysis isolating the announcement from other possible influences.
How much time does a replay take?
Whether a replay fits before a sequel depends on the player and the goal. PC Gamer’s reporter estimated about 43 hours for their own playthrough including DLC; that is one writer’s experience, not a standardized completion-time statistic. A refresher can be shorter than a full run, while optional content and a completion-focused playthrough can take longer.

- Choose a full run if you have the time and want to retrace more of the original game, including optional content.
- Pick the platform you already use if convenience matters more than starting over on another system.
What do later sales figures add to the picture?
In a later interview report, GamesRadar+ attributed sales figures to Team Cherry co-founder Ari Gibson: the original Hollow Knight had sold 15 million copies overall, including 12 million since Silksong was announced. The same report put sales at about 2.8 million when the sequel was announced. These are lifetime sales figures reported in 2026, not Steam concurrency figures or a count of purchases during the August two-week countdown. (GamesRadar+’s interview report.)

Team Cherry has said it is working on an updated Nintendo Switch 2 version of Hollow Knight and that existing Nintendo Switch owners will be able to download that edition for free when it launches. The announcement does not establish a launch date or confirm a physical cartridge. Check Team Cherry’s franchise update for its current statement.

For fans interested in collectibles, Team Cherry also said Studio Tyto and Fangamer prepared Silksong mini-figurines and directed readers to broader Hollow Knight and Silksong merchandise. That announcement does not establish current stock or retail availability. (Team Cherry’s franchise update.)
