On PS5, open your profile, select Online Status, and choose the status you want. If it keeps showing incorrectly, check the account’s privacy settings and other PlayStation consoles signed in to that account. Only troubleshoot the network if sign-in or online features are failing too.
Set your online status on the PS5
- From the PS5 home screen, select your profile. You can also open the profile menu from the Control Center.
- Select Online Status.
- Choose the status you want, such as Online. See PlayStation’s instructions for changing online status.
If the menu shows the status you selected but friends still see something different, check privacy and other signed-in devices before changing network settings.
Check other signed-in PlayStation devices
PlayStation says a status change on one signed-in PS5, or between a PS5 and PS4, can update the status on the other signed-in consoles. The selected status is also retained the next time you log in. Check the account and status on each console where it is signed in, and make sure you are checking the correct account.
Review who can see your status
On PS5, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy. Review the setting for who can see your online status and what you are currently playing. Privacy settings are linked to your account, so a change applies across devices. For a child account, a family manager or parent/guardian may control these settings. See PlayStation’s privacy settings guide.

Know what Appear Offline does—and does not—hide
Appear Offline does not guarantee that you will look offline everywhere. PlayStation notes that you might appear online to other players within a game. Players may also still invite you to voice chat or online games when your status is set to Appear Offline or Busy. If the discrepancy happens only in a particular game, the game’s own display may not match your PS5 profile status.
Troubleshoot the connection only if online features are failing
If you can sign in and use online features normally, focus on the status selector, privacy settings, and signed-in devices. If sign-in or online services are failing as well, check PlayStation Network service status, test the console’s internet connection, and make sure PS5 system software is up to date. PlayStation’s sign-in troubleshooting guide also recommends restarting the console and router; if you use Wi-Fi, try a wired connection as a diagnostic.
