If Steam rejects an email address while you’re changing the account’s contact email, wait a few minutes and retry the change in Steam’s account settings. If Steam accepts the address but its verification email or a Steam Guard code doesn’t arrive, troubleshoot delivery instead. The two problems have different fixes, and Steam does not publish specific causes for the “invalid email” error.
First, identify which email problem you have
- Steam rejects the address during an email change: retry the change after a short wait. If it continues, use Steam account recovery or contact Steam Support.
- The address is accepted, but a verification email or Steam Guard code is missing: check the inbox registered to the account, spam, trusted senders, and delivery delay.
- You can’t access the email currently registered to the account: use Steam’s recovery process or contact Steam Support.
Change your Steam account email
- In the Steam client, open Steam > Settings > Account > Change contact email. On Mac, open Steam > Preferences instead of Settings.
- Enter your Steam account password and the new email address.
- Keep the Steam confirmation dialog open while you check the new address for Steam’s verification link.
- Open the link. After verification succeeds, return to the Steam dialog and select Finish.
Steam’s instructions say to wait a few minutes and retry if an error occurs during the change. The instructions do not explain the exact causes of an “invalid email” message, so don’t assume a particular provider, punctuation mark, typo, or duplicate account is responsible. If a Steam email or Steam Guard code doesn’t arrive
Steam Guard emails go to the last email address registered to the account. Check that inbox—not only the address you are trying to add—and look in spam or junk mail. Steam recommends adding [email protected] and [email protected] to trusted senders and allowing up to 30 minutes for delivery.
If the message still hasn’t arrived, try signing in again to generate a new code. Steam also suggests trying an address with a different email provider when verification mail is not received; that is delivery guidance, not an explanation for every address-rejection error. If you can’t access your registered email
Use Steam’s account recovery process. If self-recovery cannot verify the account, Steam may provide a support form. Supply as much information that demonstrates ownership as you can.
If you think someone took over your account, use Steam’s stolen or hijacked account recovery. Steam says recovery is available even if someone changed the account email, password, or phone number. Possible login names, email addresses you used, and proof of ownership can help with the process.

Use Steam’s official help site for account problems. Don’t give your password or Steam Guard codes to anyone claiming to be Steam Support. Steam also advises securing the email account associated with Steam; see its Steam Guard guidance.
